Stevens awaits extradition
Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009
VIDALIA — Local authorities are waiting for Texas to finish with Michael Kelly Stevens before he can be extradited to Concordia Parish to face murder charges.
Stevens, 41, faces second-degree murder charges in connection with the Oct. 4 death of Myrtle Street resident Mike Welch, who was discovered dead with his throat cut in his home. Stevens was reportedly living with Welch at the time.
Stevens was arrested Oct. 13 in Channelview, Texas, after Harris County, Texas, sheriff’s deputies saw the vehicle he was driving — which was Welch’s truck — in a park after closing hours. He reportedly jumped into the Houston Ship Channel and unsuccessfully tried to swim away.
Stevens was convicted on charges of evading arrest in Harris County’s 10th Judicial Court after he pleaded guilty to them. The conviction carries a 30-day sentence.
“The judge waived (the sentence), and when the weekend came up (Stevens) was supposed to go before an extradition hearing,” Vidalia Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said. “Now we’re just waiting on a phone call.”
When he is extradited, Stevens will be magistrated in Seventh Judicial District Court in Vidalia.
During the magistration process, the judge the case is assigned to hears the facts of the case and — if the judge feels it is appropriate — sets a bond for the defendant.

Should skip extradition and go straight to execution.

Concordia parish will never see this go to trial. The justice system over there is a joke. He will plea bargain out, get 15 years serve 8 and be back on the street.

THIS IS A CASE FOR THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE.

I agree with SIOUXLADY...Texas would do a much better job at convicting and punishing than Concordia Parish will ever do. I also agree with StuWhoMoved. Not only for this crime, but include the others as well. Children and handicapped??? Must be a sorry character.

Shame we can't let Texas handle this.
They have a special place for this kind of criminal.
Death Row.

He'll never get out of prison. Someone will take care of him in there. They hate child molesters.

gerandall58 the only real difference is the punishment. Both are punishable by life without parole. The DA has to go for the death penalty for it to be 1st degree. I dont have the exact website but google Lacriminallaws and you can read in detail the differences.

NPD could stop alot these child molesting, redneck "hicks" from hurting kids if they simply pull over any car where only a caucasian male is driving with small kids inside. All NPD has to do is question the small kids in the car. Child Molestation and Sexual Assault of Kids cases would ceast to exist in Natchez if NPD adopted this. But all of the backwoods, hillbilly rednecks would cry THEIR rights would be violated if this happened!

They usually do hate child molestors, but this animal not only likes little children he likes men!

I am a member of Mike's family. The murderer had NEVER lived with Mike. Mike had only met Stevens on Saturday before he was murdered on Thursday. Mike had hired Stevens to do odd jobs around his house and yard that he could no longer do himself. Anyone who knew Mike knew that he could be too good to people. This time his generosity cost him his life.
