Men charged with attempted murder

Published Friday, October 16, 2009

VIDALIA — Two Vidalia men were charged with attempted second-degree murder following an early morning shooting Thursday.

Michael Riley, 24, 602 Maple St., and Quancy Hawkins, 20, 103 Gillespie St., were charged following the incident, which happened near the intersection of Peach Street and the Apple Street Bridge.

The incident started at approximately 2 a.m. when one of the suspects and the victim, an unidentified juvenile, had a verbal altercation about a female, Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said.

Later, at approximately 3:45 a.m., the suspects and the victim apparently met each other in the roadway, and shots were fired from the suspect’s car into the victim’s car, where one bullet struck him in the leg, Hendricks said.

The victim was transported to a Natchez hospital, and his wounds were not life threatening, Hendricks said.

Residents reported hearing three or four shots, and police were able to recover four bullet casings. They also recovered the weapon — a 9mm handgun — by the Apple Street Bridge, Hendricks said.

The victim later identified the vehicle from which the shots were fired, which Hendricks said was located at a Vidalia apartment complex on U.S. 84.

Hawkins and Riley were detained Thursday without bond.

And they need to keep that idiotic tribal like violent behavior in their own neighborhoods and not take it over on peach and apple street.

Shot in the leg. That says it all right there.

What is happening to our neighborhood? We don't have to take this. Its up to us to stop it. We need a neighborhood watch group. I will be glad to help out, let's get this stuff nipped in the bud and fast. We have good kids in this neighborhood let's keep it that way.

with all the trouble we have had in this neighborhood it seem the police department should always have a patrol in that area 24/7

I agree! I have stopped two of them and asked them to do that plus I have spoken to Tapper his self and asked him but nothing is being done. We need vpd to loop this area every 30 mints or so starting around 7 pm. They could even stop and talk to the smaller kids who are playing because these kids think its cool talking to a cop. Start a relationship with them young.

Well just keep voting the crooks in, ie sherriff,D.A. etc.., and keep seeing things get worse!

it is amazing that it was said to keep it to their neighborhood,,i used to live an azalea street myself and i iknow about the people dealing meth in that neighborhood too, it appears to me that crime is going on all over the place not just the black neighborhoods. I can assure you that when i called to police for something, because it is a predominantly white neighborhood, three cops showed up in a matter of three minutes or less. I can't say that for the black neighborhoods. All black people are not thugs and hood rats just like all white people are not racist. Crime is crime no matter who commits it.

Where is everyone getting these guns? Maybe pawn shops should close since the commercial for the one by the bowling alley is more like a commercial for artillery and combat supples and that is what they are turning our streets into. A combat zone.

Posted by bigred (anonymous) on October 16, 2009 at 8:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Where are they getting the guns? They are breaking into people's homes & cars and stealing them. Buying one from a pawn shop is no different than buying one from Sports Center or Bowie's Outfitters. The same federal laws, background checks, etc. apply.

Sorry but I think it is more than that bigred.

I dont understand why our police think it is so important to patrol the hwy instead of the neighborhoods. If there is a shift of three on patrol they should ride every road in vidalia all the time unless they get call. Speeding on a main us hwy should be a job for the state police. Protecting my neightborhoods is a job for city police. Somewhere along the line we seem to have lost that direction. It did not start yesterday this has been building for several years.

I dont understand why our police think it is so important to patrol the hwy instead of the neighborhoods.

Popeye's, Walmart, BP...etc are on the main hwy.
They can park and talk to each other and by seen. Oh yea there is the parking area under the bridge.
In the Neighborhoods there are no tickets that they can write for future credits. Only HOMES. You can not write a ticket to a non speeding house and apply it for some time off at a latter date. JMO

you guys really are right about this. They stay parked in every little nook and cranny on the highway only trying to nab someone for going 3 mph over the limit. VPD needs to be riding through the vidalia neighborhoods. half the on call's could do neighborhoods and the other half could hide in the parking lots and catch those speeders!!...same goes for the sherrifs dept too. we got kids that deserve to go play outside in the afternoons, it needs to be handled before the parents are afraid to even let thier kids play in the yard!..remember.....our little ones are the future of this community

From what I have heard.. the most ridiculous part is that they shot the wrong person in the first place. So their aim was way off. What if they had killed him over some childish drama that didn't even involve him? Grow up and leave the guns alone. They should be strictly used for hunting or protection!!

Posted by CtheOtherSide (anonymous) on October 16, 2009 at 2:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The old rules apply: don't even aim a gun at someone unless you plan to kill them. And one further...if you plan to kill them, you need to be locked up, and out of the neighborhood. Guns aren't toys, they're tools for killing, and only humans pull those triggers. Those humans are supposed to be using the brains God gave them, not letting their hormones or pride do the thinking for them. Come on! Act like civilized human beings, not the gang rats that so many young men think are so cool. I personally believe the music videos and other media go a long way toward demoralizing women and devaluing life. From there, only trouble can emerge. Where's the respect? Look back at how things were just 20-30 years ago. Kids can't! Parents, teach your kids how it ought to be, or else they'll be figuring it out from somewhere else! One more thing...how much education did any of these people involved get? Thug: comes from the word for thief and means "ruffian or assassin: gangster, tough" per Merriam-Webster on-line. The moral people need to speak louder than the demoralizers. Take a stand and hold it. Our kids deserve better than this!

Congrats, Vidalia, on becoming the new Ferriday when it comes to police.

An old puppet chief regime formerly in Ferriday - puppet master Allen.
New puppet Chief in Vidalia.

WILL YOU please remember all this idiocy and dereliction when the next election comes??

And the Hawkins have been police problems since the 1990's - nothing new going on.

At least the back of the station and the highway is protected...

@consider_reason,the Hawkins have been a problem way before the 90s,more like late 70s earlier 80s.

From what I have found out the victim/juvenile is the same one that shot at that car with a mother and her children in it, because he thought it was coming at him!.

He just got out of juvie for that and now is out at the wee hours of the night getting shot! Plus he goes to VHS.

Isn't there a curfew for underage kids?

Posted by fed_up (anonymous) on October 17, 2009 at 1:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The boy that was shot is living in this neighborhood with his white girlfriend and their baby. That's why it happened here. I know some of you are going to start screaming when I say this, but this is a perfect example of why white people don't want black people moving into their neighborhoods. It won't be long before this neighborhood will be like Morgantown in Natchez.

to the people that stay in the apple-peach street area I understand how you guys feel about this situation thats going on in yall area can't nobody tell you about your neighborhood because they don't know. but you know when you go towards the jr.high nothing but wannabes thugs. Quincy hit the young lady in the head with the gun, she was at her friends house and he busted through the door and hit her in the head. the ambulance came but she refused to go to the hospital, so thats why he got charged with what he got. the judge needs to send them on hwy.15, they suppose to be so hard they need to know what the jail life feels like. I don't feel sorry for them~they special ed and they know what they doing. they quit school just to stand out on the corner. riley just don't have his sences anymore since somebody put something in his drink~his suppose to be home boys but people got the nerves to say they didn't do this or that~lol u need to go back to school~u a manager of a store with no high school education or is this big stratton u don't have a education either!! so all yall in the same boat!!dumb
