Bulldogs take huge hit from Brandon

Published Saturday, October 10, 2009

BRANDON — One week after their stunning upset of then-No. 4 ranked Oak Grove, the Natchez High Bulldogs traveled to central Rankin County to take on the Brandon Bulldogs in an important Region 3-6A game for both teams.

Both Natchez High and Brandon entered this match-up with identical 4-2 overall records and both teams were 1-1 region play after victories over the Warriors and Terry, respectively.

Andre Crain’s 40-yard interception return for a touchdown set the tone for a long night for Natchez High (4-3, 1-2) as Brandon jumped out to a big lead and went on to defeat the visiting Bulldogs 44-15.

Brandon senior running back Roy Williams ended up being the star on offense in this game as he had over 100 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including scoring runs of 48 and 53 yards that helped the host Bulldogs jump out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Natchez High’s offense took a huge hit when junior quarterback Javon Washington had to leave the game with an injury and was taken to a hospital. Freshman Derrian Johnson came off the bench and threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Santorius Pollard in the third quarter, but that was after Brandon (5-2, 2-1) was already up 37-0 at halftime.

In addition to Crain’s pick-six, Brandon’s defense also forced a safety and Blake McGee returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown – both in the second quarter.

Joel Davis scored Natchez High’s other touchdown on a 43-yard run in the fourth quarter. He also scored on a two-point conversion run after the Johnson-to-Pollard touchdown pass.

Just keep working hard boys. Coach Reed needs to be a LITTLE MORE CONFUSING on offense, you know like you are IN YOUR MATH CLASSES. You know what goes around comes around. Ya'll (Natchez High Teachers) don't help those students. I understand some students don't care but some do. You took an oath to TEACH. UNTIL YOU DO RIGHT BY THEM EVERYTHING YOU DO IS GONNA FAIL.......JUS SAYIN.

Sometimes it is just as hard to handle success as it is failure.

Bulldogs, remember every game is different. In order to be successful, you must bring the same fight every night. There will always be challenges, but the tough ones step up.

I believe in Natchez football. Win, lose or draw I will be in your corner.

You (players, coaches, fans, community) control your destiny.

"What you gonna do, fight or run"!

Dont worry about this one Bulldogs!! We got Jim Hill, Wingfield, Terry, and Hattiesburg left. All are ripe for the picking. Focus and finish 8-3 (5-2) and get back in the playoff hunt. There is still a lot of work to do for you all. I dont think Washington will be ready for Friday night. Bruised ribs are a monster injury to deal with for any football player. Hopefully he will. I am always confident in the ability of our players.

Thanks Kubiak. In all the garbage you said up top, you did tell me something I didn't know. That Coach Reed was a Math teacher. I didnt ask him last time I talked to him. But look on the bright side. We didn't have to work hard at all in putting TWO and TWO together to figure out you are definitely FOUR saying dumb stuff on here. Dont to try go to a SWAC, MEAC, or CIAA school. They dont let dummies like you in. I hope my being intellectual in my korny joke did CONFUSE you.

Better luck next time Bulldogs! Kubiak said that Coach Reed class is confusing for some students and DSGB stated that maybe Kubiak lack the foundation of passing his class. Now don't get me wrong, I am not blaming Coach Reed but I know a quite of few kids that are struggling to pass Coach Reed's math class right now and I would not say they do not have the foundation that they need they just not able to grasp the information. So let's stop bashing each other.

To ALL who follow Natchez football. Natchez's loss isnt good. Beating Brandon was key but we fell short in that aspect. Oak Grove was a plus, but Natchez has its back against the wall in some sense. We beat Oak Grove last week, who of course turned around and went on to beat Meridian this week 28-21. Natchez lets put this week behind us, get back on track and win out.
Here are some district records for our Natchez fans and players who read the paper online.
We need to beat Hattiesburg and Terry hands down. While all district games are key, in the playoff aspect, they are KEY games. They they are both counting on beating us down the road because we have done something they havent. Beat Oak Grove.

Brandon 2-1
Oak Grove is 2-1
Meridian 2-1
Hattiesburg 2-1
Terry is 2-1
Natchez is 1-2
Jim Hill 1-2
Wingfield 0-3

Hold your head up NHS football team, faculty and staff. We all have to stumble or fall one day. But as I were always told, just don't stay down, get up, and capture your win. Bulldawgs, I'm still proud of you. Remember you will be talked about, lied on, laugh at, and have plenty of hater, but don't let that get you down. Just look at it at a compliment, it's the bad that make you stronger!!!!!!!! and wiser. SO PROUD OF YOU GUYS, AND COACHES. !!!!!!!!!!! COACH REED IF WE MADE EVERYONE HAPPY, THAN IT WOULD BE NO STRUGGLE FOR YOU. LOVE YOU (THEME SONG) !!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree pbl1978! Coach Reed, as far as I am concerned, this is the best I have seen Natchez perform in a few years so, it takes time to perfect the game and even then, you win some you lose some. Keep your head up! You have the kid's interest at heart and that's what it takes. As far as the math, I was fantastic until Algebra, but I made it through and even went on to teach 8th grade math with some introductions to Algebra. I know for me when I was in school, I had a wall up when it came to Algebra. My dad told me to remove that wall/fear and I would pass, I certainly did.

I personally know Coach Reed and he definitely cares about all of those kids, both on the field and in his class. Kubiak - maybe you should just study a little harder and possibly get a math tutor instead of blaming others...

Natchez High Football Team you got to hang in there. You have truly come a mighty long ways. Just your attitude and agressiveness have improved tremendously. I remember the days of maybe 20 or 30 fans and the scores were... need I say any more. I also remember the 50 yard line fans hanging in there cow bell and all. The last thing you can do when you are down is to give up. I know it looks rough, but thats part of life, the bad goes along with the good. If you keep working, sooner or later it will come.
Story:
Two months before Olympic trials, Bj comes up with a back injury, she is frantic she want be ready for Olympic trials. (she wasn't). Her world seem to collapse, everthing she had been working for seemed to be over. We drove 18 hours to Miami, with a U-haul of furniture, she got a part time job,we paid for a personal coach, a personal trainer, a personal nutritionist, trained in 100 degree heat, everything was on point, and then comes the injury. Make a long story short, it was rough!!!, it didn't seem fair, but she hung in there. What ever you do, don't give up,. Remember: "winners never quit, and quitters never win". Coach Reed your committment to your team is evident. Javon get well and hurry back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
