Vidalia gets first win in low-scoring game
Published Friday, October 2, 2009
VIDALIA — Vidalia High School managed just one touchdown against district rival Buckeye High School Thursday, but that would prove to be all it needed.
Vidalia defeated Buckeye 6-3 to grab its first victory of the season.
In the first quarter, Vikings quarterback Caleb Vines connected with Gary Stewart for a touchdown.
The defense would carry the Vikings for the rest of the game, as it only allowed a 28-yard field goal by Buckeye in the third quarter.
“It was a hard-fought game,” Vikings assistant coach Gary Parnham Jr. said. “We stayed in there and battled. We needed a win badly. It’s a lot different in the locker room tonight.”
Defensively, Vidalia was led by Joe Williams, who tallied 13 tackles. Van Thompson added 9 tackles and Dylan King had 8 tackles.
The Vikings ran for 111 yards on 30 carries. Running back Quan Riley accounted for 54 of those yards and Tri McCoy added 43 yards.
Vikings quarterback Caleb Vines was 3-for-10 in passes for 47 yards and a touchdown.
