NGC announces winners of poster contest

Published Sunday, November 1, 2009

Natchez — The Natchez Garden Club recently sponsored a conservation poster contest in conjunction with the National Garden Club and the National Forestry Service as a means of teaching conservation. Children had to demonstrate through original drawings of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl their understanding of fire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles. A local garden club, in our case the Natchez Garden Club, must sponsor the contest. This is the first year, in Natchez, to do the contest.

Nearly 1,000 children completed posters from Sept. 14 through Oct. 15. Children, first through fifth grades, from all Natchez schools were invited to participate. Teachers sifted through these for disqualifications. Natchez Garden Club received 360 posters that met all of the strict contest guidelines to judge. McDonald’s agreed to sponsor the prizes for the children. Winner received coupons for Value Meals and McDonald’s donated cards for free fries for all participants.

Marina Cavette, who owns Natchez Fine Framing and her daughter, Alexis Lassetter, who is studying to be an art teacher in California, judged the contest.

The presentation of awards was at the Natchez Visitor Reception Center on Oct. 20. Bob Strader, refuge manager for St Catherine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Bayou Cocodrie and Cat Island, spoke a moment about the children not just participating in an art contest but an exercise in conservation and the importance of taking care of our natural resources, and what a good job they did. After which, the children were presented with their prizes, and a first-place ribbon. In addition, the posters were displayed in the visitors center

On hand at the presentation were Cheryl Morace, president of the Natchez Garden Club, Mary Wentwort, the McLaurin art teacher, all the winners and their families. Organizers of the contest and Natchez Garden Club Young Gardeners sponsors Lyda Jordan and Suzan Hogue were also there.

On Oct. 25 the five winning posters were sent off for the state contest, and finally the state contest winners will be sent to the national contest. The grand prize national poster contest winner will win a free round-trip airfare and accommodations for four to Washington D.C. A $100 U.S. savings bond will also be awarded to the first place national winners from each grade level sponsored by the National Garden Clubs.
