Local man hammers down on crime
Published Friday, June 26, 2009
NATCHEZ —A downtown resident used a hammer to apprehend and assist in the arrest of an alleged burglar Thursday morning.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said a man who owns and lives behind a business in the 400 block of Main Street went outside at 6 a.m. Thursday and found a burglar in his backyard.
The man had stepped out into his backyard and found his weed trimmer, which he normally stores in his shed, leaned up against his brick wall.
Godbold said the burglar was apparently removing the man’s tools from his shed and leaning them against the wall to later take.
“He looked over at his shed and saw a male standing in a corner trying to hide from him,” Godbold said. “So the homeowner grabbed a claw hammer he had on a nearby table and forced the guy on the ground.”
The homeowner’s wife came outside when she heard the commotion and found her husband pinning down the alleged burglar.
She called the police, Godbold said, who arrived shortly after and arrested Kerry Weir, 35.
Weir’s last known address is 1305 LaFayette St., but he claims to now be homeless, Godbold said.
He is being detained in the Natchez city jail without bond until arraignment.
Over the past three weeks, Godbold said several downtown burglaries have plagued downtown in the Union and Rankin streets area.
Yard tools, such as weed trimmers and lawnmowers, have been taken out of yards and storage sheds.
“We’re currently interviewing him, and we may be able to clear up some other downtown burglaries,” Godbold said.

Should have used the hammer to put him out of everybody elses misery and then the other yard tools to bury the thief.

Why aren't the cops cracking down on the pawn shops that accept these goods and give them the money. This guy is homeless for what reason? Drugs! With all the assistance available out there it can't be any other reason. Drugs are expensive and doesn't leave room for food and shelter. I don't feel sorry for him. He's got the only 'hot and a cot' that he deserves. We were reading about downtown bugularies last week and last year. One down, 100 to go!

Way to go, you two. Keep your hammer close! Thanks for looking out for the block.

I don't wish to harm anyone, that would make me the same as the criminal. I think the downtown resident did the right thing by not harming the criminal and allowing the police to arrest him instead of having to call a hearst to pick up his lifeless body.
My 2 cents worth.

Wish there were more successful apprehensions as this. At least this is one helped to take a bit out of crime.

And Thor said , " With my mighty hammer I could easily end your life with one blow mere mortal , but I'm gonna call the police now ! "

Hmmmm.... ANOTHER citizen acting on their own to take care of crime... kind of like the church goers who staked out their own church?
A good trend to set - seems some law enforcement is lacking lately.
GOOD FOR YOU!!! EXCELLENT!!!!

That was one brave fool to have been out there at 6:00 in the morning. Good thing he wasn't at my house. He would be trying to figure out where part of his A__ was after I had blown it off!!!
