NHS principal will not be rehired
Published Thursday, June 25, 2009
NATCHEZ — Former Natchez High School Principal James Loftin received a certified letter from the Natchez-Adams School District superintendent Tuesday, which stated he would not be rehired for the coming school year.
Loftin originally learned his contract would not be renewed in February.
After first saying he was not interested in trying to get his job back, Loftin made an appeal to the board for re-employment in mid May.
Tuesday’s letter was the answer from the district for which Loftin had been waiting.
And Loftin said according to the letter from Superintendent Anthony Morris, the length of time that lapsed between his notice and his appeal is the reason he cannot be rehired.
Morris said the matter is a personnel issue and cannot be discussed by district officials.
Loftin said district policy mandates that any appeals to the board regarding contract renewal must be made within 10 days.
Since the deadline was missed, the board was not able to review his request, Loftin said.
“This is what I expected,” Loftin said. “I’m not really surprised.”
Loftin said while he was aware of the deadline to file an appeal, he still felt it necessary to petition the board.
“I had to try,” he said.
Loftin said he will now look for employment outside of the Natchez-Adams District.
Insubordination, conduct unbecoming of a professional, failure to manage staff and failure to follow hiring procedures were originally given as the reasons Loftin would not be rehired.
The district has not yet named a replacement for Loftin’s position.
