Two arrested in connection with May boating accident

Published Wednesday, June 10, 2009

VIDALIA — Two Jena men have been booked in connection with a fatal boating accident in early May.

Johnathon B. Edwards, 28, 152 Rockinstevens Drive, and Richard L. Finlay, 39, 164 Dead End Road, were booked into the Concordia Parish jail by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents on charges of operating a vessel while intoxicated, reckless operation of a watercraft and vehicular homicide.

LDWF officials confirmed the arrests were in connection with the May 8 boating accident that claimed the life of 15-year-old Cassie Finlay.

Investigators were not available to comment directly on the men’s alleged involvement in the incident.

The mishap happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. at Horseshoe Lake in Monterey when two boats running trotlines — one with six people in it and the other with five people onboard — apparently collided.

Along with the single fatality, seven others were injured in the accident.

The Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office was the initial responding agency, but later turned the case over to wildlife and fisheries.

Edwards and Richard Finlay were both released on a $3,000 bond.

I certainly hope that all the posters who were pointing fingers at the parents and the teens, for insisting all the teens involved were drinking, and other wise making accusations are feeling some regret today for their words. This was a horrible accident, and as usual the innocent parties - those having fun and minding their own business - are the ones hurt. I hope these men get the highest punishment they can get.

One of the men has all ready been severely punished. He lost a daughter.

I'll bet it's emotionally difficult to kill your kinfolk because of alcohol. I'd hate to be in these men's shoes, especially Mr. Finlay.

Folks...if you're gonna drink, do it when the innocent aren't around and please, please don't operate a vehicle, even if it's a tractor!

This is a really sad situation. I feel really bad for the family of the baby who lost her life as well as her father who must be living in hell right now. We can only pray and ask that God keeps his hand on their hearts and pull them through this tragedy.

It's unfortunate that too many times parents endanger their childrens lives without thinking just because they don't realize that alcohol does impair their ability to react and make responsible decisions. I don't even want to know how many times my dad drove us around while he was drinking when we were young and he thought it was ok because that's what he had always done. It's only by the grace of God that nothing ever happened. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Alcohol can be a killer - in many ways.

This is a tragic situation. These men are in a terrible situation. This family has had some terrible things in their past. This entire situation has been unfolding far several years. We can only imagine what is these men are going thourgh. The bad thing about the whole deal is that they haven't learned their lesson. The parting and drinking is still continuing and it would seem that they would learn. They are now in a situation where we want to pity them but they deserve to be punished.

we're all guilty of 'learning to late'. And sometimes it never sinks in, sometimes, it just does'ne make any difference to some.

This is a terrible thing. This young child killed by her dad's foolish drinking who otherwise would probably have given his life for her. Now this child's life is gone and her Dad will have the burden of living with this guilt.

Now for the rest of the story! The alcohol level of Mr. Finlay was 0.10, last year that was legal, it is equal to about three (3) beers. The legal limit now is 0.08. Have you ever drank three (3) beers? If you said yes then you to have been legally drunk.!. Dont you think the loss of his daughter is enough punishment, i mean look at the things you are saying I think you should step back and take a look at your own life before judging peoople you do not know. If you knew us you would know what our family is going through and would not comment about our family or what you think we are doing or that we deserve what is happening>>>>
Futhermore it was dark and one boat had turned around to check on the other and turned in front of the boat. EVERYONE in both boats were family and new each other.
It was a TRAGIC ACCIDENT and our family is already paying the price with the loss of our beautiful daughter, sister, niece, cousin or granddaughter. So nothing you say or do can be any worse.
