Board readopts recreation agreement

Published Friday, July 10, 2009

NATCHEZ — In response to changes made by the Adams County supervisors, the board of aldermen called a special meeting to readopt a recreation interlocal agreement Thursday evening.

During the supervisors’ meeting on Tuesday, the board voted to amend the interlocal agreement to include the Natchez-Adams County School District and the City of Natchez in the language concerning finances.

In the original interlocal agreement, which had previously been adopted by the county, the city and the school district, only the supervisors were named as being responsible for financing the proposed recreation complex.

To keep the process moving and unwilling to wait until its July 28 meeting, the board of aldermen met for less than 10 minutes to readopt the amendment.

City Attorney Everett Sanders advised that the amendments the supervisors made did not have a heavy impact on the interlocal agreement.

The agreement between the three entities allows for the polling of county residents’ support for a recreation complex on the November ballot.

The only concern voiced during the meeting belonged to Alderwoman Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis.

The language of the agreement names the school district as “Adams County schools,” and Mathis said she believes the legal name is Natchez-Adams County School District.

She said she didn’t want to step on the toes of the supervisors by claiming the language of the interlocal agreement they authored was incorrect.

So Sanders suggested the motion be the adoption of the agreement pending any necessary changes.

Alderman Ernest “Tony” Fields made the motion, which was quickly seconded by Alderman Mark Fortenbery.

The interlocal agreement was passed unanimously and now waits the approval of the school board.

Joyce---why not “Adams County schools"? The kids from Trinity, ACCS and Cathedral will be making use of the new complex, too, shouldn't they share in the cost?

Thes "private" schools charge thousands each year in tuition, and soon enough private school vouchers will be issued from the Federal Government. It is already happening in Washington, DC.

They can afford to participate in the expensing of a new city-wide recreational complex.

mrmojoisin- don't worry, the families of the private schools pay taxes too, and no doubt pay more than the families using the public schools....... what are you thinking about?

I feel certain that come November, unless things change and we get some good news, (doubtful) I will vote NO to this absurd recreactional nonsense which we have NO IDEA of how it will be paid for or even what it will be? The only way to pay for this is by raising taxes somewhere somehow.......and we're Taxed Enough Already!!!!

ANyway we are borrowing money to meet payroll and budgeted items as it is- to be even talking about this is plain STUPID!!!

I have never heard such ridiculous total nonsense in my life

THERE IS NO PLAN YET!!!! Does anyone know what in the world this rec complex is to actually consist of- what sport facilities, etc?

Yet I do agree having all possible entities in agreement to pay up

BUT- we just don't have any plans so the cart is up in front of the horse on this....

However, I am a big proponent of recreational community services, YET it is NOT government's duty to provide recreation .....

Private business should be doing this and would be if there was a way to make it work..

WAKE UP NATCHEZ this will not be FREE, quit dreaming.....

I guess that 20% increase in our property taxes , which is yet to be collected, has already eaten a hole in our supervisors', aldermen's, mayor's, and school district's pockets and as usual BEFORE we can get out of debt and actually know what our financial situation might be for the next few years, WE"RE TRYING TO SPEND MONEY WE DON"T YET HAVE!!!

INSANE is the only word that can describe this madness...... fiscal irresponsibility suits the situation well , or how about malfeasance of office?
