Justice court to be audited
Published Thursday, July 2, 2009
NATCHEZ — The Adams County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to audit the Adams County Justice Court.
The audit was prompted when the court’s chief clerk Betty Stiles retired Friday after more than 25 years on the job.
Adams County Chancery Clerk Tommy O’Beirne said it’s common practice for an accountant to review the court’s financial records when one clerk leaves and another takes over.
The court’s new chief clerk is Audrey Bailey, Bailey was appointed by the supervisors and was promoted from deputy clerk.
Justice Court Judge Charlie Vess said the court’s clerk is in charge of collecting fines and fees and delegating cases to the court’s judges.
And since the clerk is in charge of handling large amounts of cash — up to $80,000 a month — an audit of the books between clerks is common, Vess said.
“Checking the books is standard procedure,” Vess said.
O’Beirne said an accountant to conduct the audit will likely be hired this week.
Bailey started work Wednesday.

Every 25 years an Audit? Sounds to me like the door to the hen house stays open for all the little foxes to enter whenever they want to. AND SOMEONE IS FUSSIN' ABOUT THE BLOGGERS TELLING ALL AND KEEPING PEOPLE FROM MOVING TO NATCHEZ. HOW COMICAL CAN IT GET???? But.....no one's laughing.

Don't exaggerate and read the article correctly. It says Stiles is retiring after 25 years -- audits are done when clerks change. It says nothing about never having had an audit in 25 years. Now, that being said, that could be true but the article did not state that. This is how rumors get started and can be ugly. Find something positive to say.

Betty Stiles is one of the most honorable and trustworthy persons in Natchez. I hope she enjoys her retirement. And to all of you that are making comments on this forum, all the article says is that it is common for an audit after a clerk leaves; so I am sure there have been audits before and all was okay. Betty, I want to THANK YOU for the fine job you did, and if anyone deserves a happy retirement it is you.Take care.

Why don,t they just do regular audits on everybody? Or we can be Binkyed to death. I would rather spend tax money on audits that find out we,ve been cheated out of thousands down the road. If your not a crook, audits don,t bother you.
