Hoffpauir called up to big leagues

Published Thursday, July 2, 2009

VIDALIA — Jarrett Hoffpauir’s Major League Baseball dream has finally come true.

After two years of playing for the Memphis Redbirds — the St. Louis Cardinals’ AAA affiliate — the Vidalia native and former All-American at Southern Miss was called up the the big leagues on Wednesday.

Hoffpauir was in uniform for the Cardinals in their 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants Wednesday night but did not play in the game.

“This is a dream come true for Jarrett,” Hoffpauir’s dad and Vidalia High baseball coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “This is what he’s worked for all his life. I’m sure he’s on cloud nine right now.”

Hoffpauir was in Albuquerque, N.M. preparing for the Redbirds’ game against the Albuquerque Isotopes Wednesday night when he was called into Redbirds manager Chris Maloney’s office.

“The manager told him, ‘Jarrett, you’ve been traded,’” Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “He said, ‘You’ve been traded to St. Louis, you’re going to the big club.’”

Jarrett Hoffpauir could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Hoffpauir was called up following a wrist injury to infielder Mark DeRosa.

Cardinals pitcher Clayton Mortensen was sent down to Memphis to make room for Hoffpauir on the roster.

Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said he doesn’t know if his son will stick in the majors at this point, but even if he doesn’t, it will be easier for him to be called up again at a later date.

“I don’t know how long it will last, because he got called up due to an injury,” Hoffpauir said. “But you’ve got to get your foot in the door. Once you get your foot in the big leagues, it makes it a little easier next time.”

The Cardinals play the Giants at home again today before heading to Cincinnati to play the Reds in a weekend series.

“There’s going to be a white pickup truck following them all the way,” Hoffpauir said.

Hoffpauir said the outpouring of support from the community has been heartwarming.

“We found out at about noon (Wednesday) and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since,” he said. “There are so many well-wishers in the area, people who have supported Jarrett. We will carry all that support to Jarrett and let him know he’s got lots of people pulling for him.”

This is a great honor and opportunity, young man. I pray that you do this area proud and become a household name in professional baseball by working hard and playing hard. I also pray that you do not become involved in a performance enhancing drug scandal that is so prevalent in today's sports. I remember a few years ago the ND "Good Morning " block on the bottom of the sports page featured Nook Logan for several straight months until he was named in a scandal. Now we never see or hear about him anymore. Please don't become the wrong kind of statistic, nor the wrong kind of role model for youngsters.

Once again the supposed proponent of free speech, the press, has deemed fit to yet again edit someone else's expression of it.

You so often remind me of Rosie O'Donnell who was anti second amendment until it suited her to let her children be guarded by an armed guard when at risk.

At least the editing staff fits right in with the hypocrisy of the area.

Well said Jason. I think most of the people who post on here are more clueless than our elected officials.

Blog or otherwise, one owned and operated by a newspaper, that vehicle which is the forerunner of so many legal issues as far as free speech is concerned - should be a little more open to the concept than say, "JasoninMemphis" @ blogspot.

That a simple request by someone else who is "offended" at anothers opinion is enough to remove a comment, seems to be at odds with the entire idea presented by a comments section - a forum to present ideas and opinions, which would be most pure if it wasn't edited and white washed.

I avail myself of free speech on many levels in many places, and as you have moved on up to the big town of Memphis, why not let us little minds swim around in the only little pond we have left - poor little Natchez.

You are pompous and arrogant, and I defend your right to demonstrate it so very clearly in this or any other forum. There is nothing that you have to offer me that I find valuable enough to sink in.

Thanks for your input.

Way to go Jarrett! This is a dream of many a young boy growing up and to realize it is a major accomplishment on your part. Stay positive and anything you desire is possible no matter what others may think.
