Annexation is a shot Natchez needs

Published Thursday, July 2, 2009

A city that isn’t growing is a city that’s dying. And, fortunately, the City of Natchez may soon get a shot of growth — or at least the potential for growth.

Natchez took a step closer to gaining some long overdue elbow room Monday after the city’s annexation plan passed its first hurdle — the chancery court’s approval.

The plan still must receive approval under the regulations contained in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The authorities must decide if the annexation plan would unfairly benefit one race of people over the other.

Since no one lives in the affected areas, it would seem logical that that step would be a relatively easy one. The thought is that you cannot disenfranchise voters who don’t exist.

Beyond that common sense approach, we’d argue that people who live in our community should be considered Natchezians first and foremost before any skin color label is applied.

Annexation, particularly intelligent annexation of areas that are most likely to be developed for commercial purposes soon, is good for all of the community.

The fact is that many businesses prefer to be located within the city limits, even if doing so means slightly higher taxes. Often those taxes are offset by lower insurance costs that come with being closer to city police and fire services.

We applaud the city for taking this bold step.

We remain convinced that Natchez has incredible potential for growth and as the national economy begins picking up and climbing out of the recession, Natchez could be poised for great growth.

Hopefully, when the annexation plan becomes a reality, the city will have the room to grow when and where it needs.

How is annexing this land going to move the police and fire stations closer to them? That will be a pretty neat trick- bending space and time. Is this some new law of relativity Einstein overlooked?

Once again the Democrat doesn't seem to be paying attention. With this energy bill there is not going to be any recovery, the whole point of the energy bill is to restrict growth and throttle down the economy to bring the US into economic parity with the developing nations.

Contact your U. S. Senator immediately to voice your opinion to defeat the House Bill called the Waxman-Markey Energy Bill! It is strictly a regressive piece of legislation and part of Owhampy and his Liberal Tribe of Socialist's! This legislation will definately hurt Natchez and Adams County!

"the whole point of the energy bill is to restrict growth and throttle down the economy to bring the US into economic parity with the developing nations"

Now THAT has got to be the best little bit of fiction Enkik has hatched in a while. Imagine a US president so diabolical that they would intentionally hamstring the US economy that way. Owhampy the Evil.

You know they used to tell me "speak of the devil and in he walks". I was 25 years old before I realized what they were saying is that the folks that point fingers on matters and accuse pure evil are often the very devil that is walking into the room.

But Natchez has been hurt.. you people worship that town like its really got something going.. but it never has .. and never will as long as you got the tourism cult.....

I sincerely hope Natchez does grow... thats what the citizens need.. thats what the talent that was bred in Natchez and wants to stay in Natchez deserve. Natchez has lost so much of its people because of lack of jobs and careers and the focus on the tourism.

Yh, what is one reason often giving for taxing undesirable behavior? You know as well as I do that reason is to alter the behavior. New energy taxes will result in less use of energy. Less use of energy will result in less production. Less production will result in less wealth. Less wealth will result in a lowered standard of living.

Part of this plan is to transfer .7% of the GDI to third world nations, just as every other industrialized nation has agreed to do under the action plan.

"The new strategy therefore focuses on the need to enable, encourage and engage people and communities in the move toward sustainability; recognising that Government needs to lead by example."

Sustainability means using less of the earth's resources, using less resources means lowered standard of living.

"The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their
basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future
generations."

We have to use less to let others have more.

We simply have to use less because the earth is running out.

...........You know they used to tell me that ignorance is bliss.

The human mind is a network with billions of neurons that are conductive to nerve impulses. I think ignorance is like an open circuit. People stop the flow of information by opening the circuit and breaking connections for whatever reason. They reject being conductive to understanding. Some people chose ignorance because a circuit has been underexposed to stimulus from the rejected source and some because the circuit has been over-exposed and weakened by the source. In both instances they refuse to try to process any added data in order because it threatens to destabalize the very foundation of their network.

Any tax system is a reflection of a country/county/city(s) communal values or the values of those in power. And thusly, power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I just want to know who said that nobody lives in these affected areas?

And how slight, they think these slightly higher taxes would be, considering our county taxes are already at an all time high.
