Woman hits person with vehicle, jailed
Published Saturday, August 29, 2009
NATCHEZ — A Natchez woman was jailed Thursday after striking a local store owner with a vehicle.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said the incident occurred when a group of three or four people entered a cell phone store on Sergeant S. Prentiss Drive and one of the individuals in the group stole a phone from the store.
Godbold said when the group left, the storeowner followed them out of the shop and stood behind their vehicle in an effort to keep them from leaving.
But the vehicle’s driver, Renata Washington, 29, allegedly hit the storeowner with her vehicle as she backed out of the parking lot.
Godbold said the shop’s owner was taken to a local hospital, but was not injured.
Washington was charged with one count of simple assault and was being held on $704 bond.
Godbold said was unsure if more arrests would be made in connection with the theft.

Is this what they call the "Roll Over" plan for roll over minutes?

Sounds more like a "dropped call" to me.

You can't really blame the woman driving. I mean,REALLY, what are you supposed to do when you're out for a funfilled day of shoplifting with friends and some stupid store owner blocks your getaway.

Simple assault? Sounds more like assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Was the one driving also the one who stole the phone? If not, then of course there should be more arrests!

Exactly where is this store on Sergeant S. Prentiss Drive?

Stupid ! I see why I moved away from Natchez. I would not want my children around the fools in Natchez. Please lock her up and forget about this ignorant, mindless woman.

That was funny natchez mom55 rollover minutes. But I do agree this charge was to light and the bond was too low.

I bet I know who this was.....
and glad he wasn't hurt
hard to believe a 29 year old woman would stoop so low as to steal a cell phone, and then try to run over someone for it....
what a looser....and yes the charge should be a lot more, but since the storeowner wasn't hurt seriously, she'll get away with a lesser charge, that's messed up, around here you have to dead or close to it for the judge to allow a more just punishment for such dangerous and reckless behavior.....

A $704 bond!?!? For stealing and intentionally hitting someone with a car? That should have been assault with a deadly, AT LEAST. Pathetic.
Her bond looks like she got caught smoking weed instead of using a two ton vehicle as a weapon after a robbery.

prettywife- it's not just Natchez that has fools like this, I don't know where you are now, but when I travel thugs and thieves are around, I've been robbed while travelling so......

The driver Ms. Washington will probably get a public defender in Municipal Court. Then pay a fine and get
a suspended jail sentence. Hope there were no medical
bills or not only would the store owner be injured, he/she
would have to pay for the med bills too!!

Maybe they can make the woman's Medicaid pay for the hospital bills! I loved the rollover minutes and the dropped call remarks, it's nice to giggle over coffee, haha.

how to get what you want: if you want lets say a cell phone really bad but cant afford one (prob cause you dont have a job and the food card wont pay for it) dont worry, just go into the phone store with a few other losers and take one. yeah, thats right, you can take sh** that dont belong to you. and when the store manager stands behind your car-run him/her over steal their phone and BAM! thats how to get 2 for 1. not saying that this theif gets public assistance in any way but if they do i think it should be cut out. dont reward criminal behavior.

Do the crime, pay the time. She and her little gang should all ha ve to serve jail time or better yet community service. This type of justice system is why criminals commit the crimes, they are not scared of what their sentence will be cause usually it is not one. The store owner on the other hand, had he tried to protect himself by firing at the car or grabbing of the suspects he would have been charged with attempted murder or assault with a deadly weapon. These person intentionally set out to rob from the store and got away with it. Come Natchez get a gripand get the thugs off the street of let the stor owners handle the problems with no reprecussions. TRASH WALKS OUR STREETS and hard working people must pay the sacrafice of owning a business. If you steal, cut off the hand that stole, if you urder, be murdered, if you rape, castrate, and so on. Pisses me off that justice is never served accordingly.

They do it because they can, they do it because they get away with it. They are mean people with no respect for anything or anyone. They don,t care and never will. They were raised to do this kind of stuff. Taught from a early age and when someone questions them or trys to punish them, they scream bloody murder. It,s all they do constantly day in and day out. It won,t change till blood runs all in the streets and that,s coming one day in the not to distant future.

Store owners are going to have to get permits to wear guns to protect themselves from these criminals . Those hoodrats just took what they wanted and then ran the owner over . Where is heat packing Rambo ?

simply apply the "no Swarm rule" 1 individual allowed in certain businesses at any time just like a hospitol one visitor at a time use the buzzer on the door thing..lol will keep the posse at bay and then deal with the person who has the legit reason for being there. wow ! that sounded to simple.

butch, I agree with you, if the druggies and the thieves can pack arms and get away with it, all people, business owner or not should get a gun permit to protect what is rightfully theirs. It makes me sick that this town has gotten to the state that it has, just a smaller version of Jackson. You bet if I am approached by a potential criminal and he or she poses a threat, there will be a phone call such as the one on Sling Blade. You may want to send a hearse. I am not going to take s**t off anybody. Its time we all pull together to get the thugs off the streets and not be afraid to go outside.

Dial .45 not 911!!!!! There are a lot of people out there that are pakin' without a permit. The U.S. military has lossened numerous "assassins" on the public. We were trained to "KILL" the "Enemy" !!!! All we have to do now is identify the "Enemy" !!!!!! One Shot- One Kill !!!!!

Stand behind a vehicle to prevent it backing-up?
This theft angers me as well. Does anyone know the
value of the stolen cell phone? Thankful the store
owner wasn't hurt.

A lot of people out there think they are owed something. That is what happens when you start giving away services others have to pay for. Personally I don't owe anyone sh-t and if you come knocking at my door looking to steal you won't make it back to your vehicle.

The charge is all that Mississippi law would allow. There are no assault & battery charges- it all falls under simple assault in MS. It only moves up when extreme circumstances are involved and if the owner was released then the other elements of the crime probably were not there. As far as other charges, the store owner will have to be the one to file charges if the crime is a misd. since it did not happen in front of police.

I agree with you Lifeboat. When someone hit my car once, they didn't have insurance and the judge ask if I had any. And you know the rest, mine paid and nothing happened to the guy. They know that you can't get blood out of a turnip so that's why they do it. And they know we honest people will end up paying for it anyway. And her or her job's insurance will pay her medical this time too.

Butch and others....
in case you didn't know- in MS business owners and home owners can carry a firearm already without a permit, and there is also the castle walk law, which allows business owners to carry their weapon on their castle walk from business to home. Also there is a no retreat clause, in case of intrusion you do not have to retreat before using deadly force when you determine your life or property is in jeopardy. Also MS is a open carry state, ANYONE can carry a firearm out in the open and in their vehicle, but you cannot carry a weapon concealed without a permit in public places. Also you cannot carry your weapon in the open into restricted places. That's my understanding, please correct me if needed.
I think the store owner could have shot the tires out of this car once she tried to hit him with the car without any problem, and actually, if he was in fear of his life from her aggressive actions with her car trying to run him over, he could have shot her, but he would had a lot of explaining over that I"m sure, he might have even faced some charges, but likely got off .....
anyway, I wish he had drug her out of the car and whooped her good before the policd got there......

NAMVET, re: Aug. 29 post, and Krogers: I don't think that "makin' the grass grow..." would apply to a shoplifter with no sense. Guns and shooting would be for feeling endangerment to your HOME or person. You guys scare me!

juju- correction- your business is your property- a store owner has the right to protect his property and his person, a store owners has the right by MS law to carry a weapon and use it if needed in his business and his home

My God, What is the world coming to? Is it that serious that an indivisual has to steal a cell phone. Hell, don't talk. These people need to PRAY. Maybe if they had more christian beliefs they would learn that God provides ALL of our needs and even supplies most of our wants. When all else fails try the PRAYER line not the cell line!

People that commit these crimes should have to do community service. There are enough thugs around here they could fix the cities grass cutting problem for little cost. And while they are push mowing medians they can where signs on their backs that say " I stole from_ _ _ _". I think this is not a bad idea.

pbnj, WalMart in Hattiesburg makes them walk their sidewalks with signs after they are caught shoplifting. That is really messed up with the light charges. Maybe the store involved can press civil charges against her once the criminal charges are done. They would do it if one of their employees had done it, so why not stick it to her twice?

really people? some of the comments were funny and i did learn a few things. natchez is still home to some of the biggest idiots on earth. she stole a cell phone. how was she gonna use it? she would not have been able to turn it on. that and why did the owner have real phones instead of dummies on the floor? i am sooo glad i got out of that place....wow.
