What is this?
One arrested in carjacking
Published Friday, August 7, 2009
NATCHEZ — What started as a friendly gesture ended in a felony carjacking Sunday.
Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said a Natchez resident traveling in the 800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Street at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday was flagged-down by a man asking for a ride.
“(The driver) recognized him as a former classmate and offered him a ride,” Godbold said.
Once the driver stopped, two men entered his vehicle and requested a ride to a nearby service station.
Shortly after entering the vehicle, one of the men pulled a gun on the driver and told him they intended to rob him, Godbold said.
However, as the three men drove through the city, the driver was able to convince the men to let him drop them of at a department store on Sergeant S. Prentiss Drive so that they could rob someone else, Godbold said.
“When they got (to the store) the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the store,” Godbold said.
His assailants left in his vehicle.
Godbold said the driver was able to identify Desmond Washington, 22, as the alleged gunman in the carjacking.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a second suspect in the incident, however police are not releasing his identity.
Washington is currently being held without bond.

It was just a misunderstanding. They just needed a ride. They didn't mean to steal the car. The guy abandoned it. Yeah. That's it. He abandoned the car and they were just moving it out of the way of the gas pumps. They were just trying to help.

These guys could have seriously hurt this man. They should be locked up with no bond so they won't get out of jail and do this again while waiting for this trial. What is wrong with these people and the judges who let them out?I am sick of reading about someone being carjacked and shoplifting. The judges are not sentencing these people correctly cause they will be out doing this again. Teach them a lesson. Just lock them up until trial and then send them away.

ckurself1st, did you not read the article? "Washington is currently being held without bond." An arrest warrant is out for the second suspect. I bet the victims of these crimes are also sick of the carjacking and shoplifting. Maybe you should run for judge so you can sentence "these people correctly".

4am, !!???
did you notice that!! 4 am - I would NEVER pick up anyone (unless I knew them and knew them well) at 4 AM.......
oh, on another note.....
did you know Craig Godbold is running for Sheriff of Adams County?
I think he would do a great job
He needs monetary support to get the word out about his qualifications and that he is running, please contact Craig Godbold and offer a contribution to his campaign
I did, he will have a tough time beating the other guys that have big money support,
we need a sheriff that will help Adams Co, all of it, not just the big shots.......

ckurself1st
you know you do have a point
I have had several people arrested for shoplifting, and it was their third or fourth offense which is supposed to be a felony....
but if they plead guilty the judge will allow the charge to be a misdemeanor, give them two months to pay their fine, give them a suspended sentence for most of their jail time, and allow the jail time they do have to spend in jail to be scheduled to be when they are off from work.......
so it's like let's do everything we can to prevent thieves from experiencing ANY inconvenience they might have while receiving their "punishment".....I personally disagree with this philosophy.
when you consider the time you have to give up from work to "prosecute" these thieves, the fact that they did along with the leniency they receive for their crimes, it is really frustrating and aggravating........

And dropped them off at a "department store" at 4AM..I didn't realize WalMart was a department store..that's the only store open at that time of morning.

Ya'll don't get it.
The guy had a gun. Do whatever it takes to get out of the situation.
He probably called 911 straight away with details of his stolen car by an armed criminal.

I do get it. What I don't get is why are you picking folk up at 4AM even IF you do "know" them? Like another poster said, I know folk I went to high school with and they aren't getting near me, let alone in my car!
