Natchez High School’s Rico Richardson rounds the corner Friday evening in Natchez’s 21-19 loss to Franklin County.
Penalties mark NHS loss
Published Saturday, September 20, 2008
NATCHEZ — Natchez High saw its opportunity for an upset disappear underneath a flurry of yellow flags Friday night.
The Bulldogs led 19-0 over Franklin County in the third quarter, but penalties and mistakes were their downfall and helped Franklin County come back for a 21-19 win.
Natchez High was penalized 24 times for 191 yards, with 18 of those penalties taking place in the second half.
Throw in three second half turnovers, and its easy to see why the Bulldogs from Franklin County were able to walk out of Natchez with a victory.
“It’s kind of tough to be second and 15 or second and 20 all the time,” Natchez coach Lance Reed said. “We don’t have any plays to get us out of those situations.”
Despite the penalty advantage, Franklin County coach Trent Hammond said his team needed no favors coming back in the game.
“The officials didn’t decide this game,” Hammond said. “The kids on the field decided it. They bowed their necks and came out in the second half an played like they were supposed to.”
Natchez got a quick strike to open the game when quarterback Javon Washington found Rico Richardson streaking down the sidelines for a 41-yard touchdown pass on Natchez’s first play from scrimmage.
Natchez had a couple of chances to extend the lead in the first half, driving inside the Franklin County 20-yard line on their next two drives, but turned it over on downs both times.
After not taking advantage of great field position on those two drives, Natchez got a big break right at the end of the half to extend its lead.
As time expired in the first half, Washington launched a ball into the end zone which was tipped in the air and caught by Richardson to put Natchez up 13-0 at halftime.
Natchez wasn’t done yet. Franklin County kicked off to the Bulldogs to begin the second half and Richardson returned it 77 yards for another touchdown to make it 19-0 after the two-point conversion failed.
However, Franklin County gave an indication on how the remainder of the game would be on its next drive.
The Bulldogs drove the ball 50 yards — all on the ground — and scored when quarterback Jamie Collins barreled in from 2-yards out.
Franklin County scored again five minutes later after Natchez failed on a fake punt attempt from midfield.
Franklin County wasted no time scoring, and Collins once again raced in the end zone, this time from 18-yards out.
Natchez made another crucial mistake on its next possession, as Richardson fumbled the ball to set up Franklin County at the Natchez 30-yard line.
Franklin County needed just six plays to find paydirt, as Collins scored his third touchdown of the night, this one on a 12-yard scamper on fourth and four.
Collins finished the game with 98 yards rushing and two TDs.
“We played like we’re capable of playing in the second half,” Hammond said. “It wasn’t so much about making adjustments, it was more about fire and desire. We’ve got to play four quarters of football if we want to win. Tonight we just played two quarters.”
Natchez never was able to put a drive together in the fourth quarter because of the penalties, especially holding calls, which nullified several big plays.
The Bulldogs’ final chance at a win was snuffed out when Washington was intercepted by Edwards McGhee on the Natchez 40-yard line with 47 seconds left.
Washington fished the game 19-of-18 for 280 yards, with 221 of those coming in the first half, but had two second half interceptions to go along with his two first half touchdown passes.
However, the mood was one of disappointment after the game, and Reed took responsibility for the loss.
“As a coach I have to do a better job,” Reed said. “We’ve got to play disciplined football and play more consistently.”

PENALTIES! Are you serious? I think the refs did decide this one. Who cares what the papers say. I cant see how half of those offensive holding calls were even legitimate. I'm normally a positive person, but this game was ridiculous. Every time Natchez looked at the ball they got a flag. There was so many yellow flags being thrown that I was starting to think the field was a hazardous chemical environment. Natchez! WAKE UP. No fights in the stands this time. You have a great kicker in #75. The fact that his name gets called so much should ring a bell to you! He is a factor in my book. Use him instead of trying to prove something on 4th downs. In case you didnt notice, Franklin County sat back in the cut all night and fed off your mistakes. That was the ONLY thing got them going. 191 yards of penalties to add to their lacking offense. On both sides of the ball. You speak so much about #75 on the radio but dont let him kick anything other than extra points. If thats the case then its a long road for us starting next week. I thought we learned this long ago. Kicking saves games. If I sound negative Bulldog fans, then excuse me. But I call it how I see it and I know Natchez has a decent kicker. I am just awed by this one. Hats off to Franklin County for weathering the storm. Like both the announcers said, Natchez just handed you this one. Take this as a learning experience and dont get down on yourselves mentally because it shows. Take your time, review the game film, and look at your mistakes. See you next week.

THE REFS ARE TO BE ASHAME OF THEMSELVES, TO DO THOSE KIDS LIKE THAT.GIVEN NATCHEZ MADE SOME MISTAKES ,BUT THE REFS WON THAT ONE.NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I SEEN A TEAM GET SO MANY PENALTIES EVERY TIME THEY ATTEMPTED TO MOVE THE BALL.ITS LIKE THE REFS WERE SAYING "UH!UN! NO YOU DIDN'T MOVE THAT BALL!" NATCHEZ KEEP YOUR HEAD UP,BECAUSE YOU JUST CAN'T BEAT THE OFFICIALS AND THE OTHER TEAM.

That had to be the worst called game ever. Everytime Natchez moved the ball a yellow flag would hit the ground, the refs would huddle and Natchez was being marked for a foul. The worst call of the nite had to be a chop block called on a Natchez defender that made a tackle on a Franklin County ball carrier. True enough Natchez should have put the game away earlier but the refs saw to it that they couldn't. After all the flags going against the fellas they sort of imploded and began to shoot themselves in the foot.
Well played game tho Natchez; you played hard and should have come out with the victory but when you are flagged for 13 holding calls its impossible. Use ALL of your weapons and spread the ball around in district and the playoffs are in your future!!!
I LOVE MY NATCHEZ BULLDOGS!!!!! CONTINUE ON WITH YOUR SEASON AND PUT THIS GAME BEHIND YOU!!!!! COACH REED I HOPE YOU GIVE THESE REFS THE WORST RATING YOU CAN GIVE THEM AND SEND THIS FILM TO THE HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION TO REVIEW!!!!!!

This game was terribly officiated and a bad way to lose, but we have to put it behind us and move forward. To get penalized for 191 yards and only lose by 2 points to a good team, lets me know that we have a team that can go a long way this year. So we have to look at the big picture and realize that game didn't mean anything, and the real season starts next Friday in Meridian!

Will someone please pull out the violins!!!!! All of the above post with the exception of one are from a bunch of whinny babies. Please accept the fact that Natchez High LOST THE GAME!!! I don't know if you just became a fan of football, but ALL games are decided by the officials whether we like it our not. I mean, did ya happen to catch the Denver and San Diego game last week?? Get a grip and a tissue and suck it up!!

lbank77: you comment is stupid because we speaking on the truth based on what we saw in Tom F. Williams Stadium last night. I dont know what you talking about. But to NATCHEZ: We go look past that one and
on to next week as we prepare for
some TOP CONTENDERS next week. Yall keep on winning your close games just like last night. Its obvious Franklin County knew they couldnt contend because it took them bringing their own officiating crew on the road to win. I wonder how many other games this happened at. Once F.C. saw Natchez wasnt playing with them in the first half, them fools went buckwild with the flags. Everytime Natchez moved the ball, a flag. Are you serious? I know Natchez. And I know they are not that undisciplined to warrant all those penalties. But thats ok. Take this one and run with it because Natchez not no cheaters. Coach Hammond is bold with the statements he made last night. Just earlier in the week he was so worried about how to contain a bigger stronger Natchez team. Well Coach, I guess you found a way. To Natchez fans and the public: Read the story from earlier in the week when they interviewed Hammond and you will notice the concern he indicated. But thats ok. You had to call back three Bulldog touchdowns to pull this one off and flag us for over 190 yards. If Natchez was smart, they would take this game tape to the athletic board for review. But as an athlete, I know the Natchez High Bulldogs enough to know that they realize who they are and where they've come from. BULLDOG PRIDE!! Take this one F.C. and run with it.

No excuses. We should have put the game away early, and I am taking nothing away from FC. But, the officiating in this game was horrible. Guys, these are kids. Please let them decide the game on the field.
Natchez High was penalized 24 times for 191 yards, with 18 of those penalties taking place in the second half. 18 penalties in the second half! How can you keep old mo when that is going on.
Anybody that has played, or really watches football knows the old saying; "you could throw a flag for holding on every play". Well these refs sure tried.
We will suck it up. We always do. These are the kinds of lessons that we always get.
Oh and by the way, I know Jamie (FC #1) is all state, and a HECK of a player. But #3 for Natchez (Rico Richardson) was the best athlete on the field.

Congratulations to Franklin High School. Way to play the game. I have to say that you did not give up and played hard when needed.
Fans, the refs are assigned to the game are not following a certain team around...that is bullsh17. The kids could have been tired at the end of the game and not thinking about technique when blocking. It happens. Get over it and move on to next week.

Let me just say that I have been a football fan for over 30 years. I have seen lots of games that were decided on a bad call. But this game was THE WORST OFFICIATED GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!! The refs made a MOCKERY of Natchez Highs Football Team, Fans, Students & Administration. I don't know how FC can walk away with their heads held high after this one. Knowing that the game wansn't decided by either team, only a poor excuse for an officiating crew. Keep your head up Natchez, your season will end better that Franklin Co's will.

Where do they get those moron referees ? No I take that back , Retards trying to officiate a game . Franklin County was given that game to them by way of stinking officiating .

TRON601: your comment was stupid. as the acclaimed football expert that you think you are, you should know that the officiating crew is assigned to the games and is not selected by either team. and by the way, didn't FC have a touchdown called back. and oh yeah, how many penalties did FC have in the first quarter? but they still managed to come out in the second half and overcome a 19 point defecit. that's right 19 POINTS!!! no matter how bad the officiating was (because it was bad for both teams), natchez should have put the game away. and thanks, because we will run away with this one... take a chill pill and that tissue and wipe your tears.

I was at the game and I do not live in FC but I saw holding penalitys in the firtst half that wasnt called on NHS. Being a Former Coach and now a recruiter, it looked like the refs were going to give it to NHS in the first half. I saw the kick-off team OFFSIDE twice on NHS but wasnt called. I told a friend that the REFs were confused in the first half. The second touchdown for NHS was a CLIPPING but wasnt called. Yes #3 for NHS is a great athlete but he doesnt have the MENTAL toughness that #1 for FC has. You will see #1 on SUNDAYs in a few years if he keeps his head and doesnt become a THUG or BIG_HEADED. #3 has excellent track speed but doesnt have the type of COACH that he needs to be FOOTBALL polished. Coach Reed and staff have come a long way but being 4 or 5-A, they have lots of things to learn when it comes to MENTAL DISCIPLINE for players. Wonder why the S.W.A.C. is the most penalized CONFERENCE in NCAA HISTORY for the last 27yrs. (Tight but its right) In football you cant just have good athletes you MUST have DISCIPLINE. Examples: Jerry Rice (MVSU) Steve McNair (ASU) Doug Williams (GSU) Donald Driver (ASU) many others at skilled positions.
I can go on and on but I know some will be affended. These men are GREAT ATHLETES but when they left college and entered the PRO's they were so far behind the other CONFERENCES with Football intell. Still GREAT Athletes though. Coach Reed take my advice and get a little tougher on discipline and watch the careless penalties dissappear. Will some parents get affended, sure but NATCHEZ will not have to make so many excuses after a loss that they had in the palm of there HANDS. You have to FINISH the JOB and have KILLER INSTINCTS.

ok specialk, i was with you until the comments about jamie collins becoming a thug and the comments about the SWAC. there are college teams in the SEC whose kids lack discipline, it is not just the SWAC. there are kids who come out of SEC schools and enter the nfl with little to no football intelligence. true enough, the coach and the program have a lot to do with this, but i am certain the problems are not just found in the SWAC. and yes, i was offended by a few of your comments because you wrote them to be offensive. #1, jamie is not nor will he ever be a thug because he was not raised in that environment. #2, thanks for stating you are not from franklin county because we don't need your kind of mentality seeping into the heads of our kids. you may want to time travel back into the 60's. #3, if i'm not mistaken jerry rice still holds most of the nfl's receiving records in spite of his lack of football intelligence as you call it. #4, please tell me what school you are recruiting for so that i can inform jamie, alexis, jordan, frank, and bobby not to apply there.....

It is funny how the 16 FC penalities are over looked. There were no touchdowns by Natchez called backed. FC hasd the touchdown called back, plus on your two 1st half touchdowns the FC defender falls down on the first one letting the man run free down the sideline. The second was a broken up pass deflected and tipped away by FC into the arms of an unsuspecting WR. Officials were bad for both sides.

I have been an avid football fan for many years, witnessed the sport at all levels but never in all the days of my life have I seen such a disgrace in the discipline of officiating. Any true football fan knows that holding is a call that can potentially be called on every play. It lends itself to the descretion of the officials. With that said, the one-sidedness of the calls raises much suspicion, especially in the second half. The question here to me isn't how 'poorly disciplined' the natchez team was but more importantly how the opposition could perform so 'perfectly'. Come on refs, let the kids play. These are kids aged 16-18, let them play. They didn't play perfect but neither did Franklin County. The NBA even knows when to let the players play at certain situations. No, I'm not saying just let everything go but you must keep the "judgement calls" closer across the board. I do not know the motivation or even if there was motivation for the way this game was called but I do know that it just didn't seem right to me. I felt terrible for the kids. They played their hearts out and gave us fans one hell of a game. They left everything on that field that night. Refs, what did you leave on that field that night besides yellow flags? And that's the way I saw it. That's my call.

Two years ago you came back and won when down 21-0, we (FC) said you beat us. Now we come back and win from 19-0, and it was stolen. False starts, lineman down field, lining up offsides by the defense all things that should have been no called-OK. FC had penalities- Natchez had penalites. Natchez played a good game but both the fans and the Democrat should not blame te officials for the lost. Credit the players and Coaches of FC for keeping the head and their focus and palying the game until the end.

FC has to cherry pick officials to guarantee a win ! Natchez should request not to have this cheating club on their schedule anymore . This is probably how they won their state title with cheating officials from their area hand picked for them . I still can't believe they beat McComb Tigers . Nothing but cheating following this team .

FC has been cheating like this for years . They have a lot of people fooled that they are a good team . Nothing but cheaters . I was there , the referees stole this game from NHS . I seriously doubt that they could beat Natchez on their own . Fayette Tigers play close attention to what just happened in Natchez . FC cheats ! Don't let them steal a win from your team .

When I read most of the comments that have been posted about this game I understand why our children have such a hard time excepting defeat. No matter who you are, where you are from, what you do, or who or what you may know, defeat, rejection, and all the other negative stuff is a part of life. I think that this game was a well played game by both teams. Both teams deserved to win, but there could be only one winner. This game is the kind of game I would pay my money to see any day. If you had any fingernails they should all have been bitten off after 11:30pm Friday night. To the winning Bulldogs congratulations. To the losing Bulldogs this game is definitely not the end of the world. You all walked off the field (happy or maybe not so happy) healthy young men. I pray that the Franklin Bulldog that was hurt is doing fine with no serious injuries. May GOD BLESS both teams and all our surrounding school teams to have a safe if not winning football season.

Joykin that is a great post even better than my own. And to all you idiots Natchez high paid and provided the officials. That is the home schools responsibility. A coach can request that certain officials not do their games but they can not request certain officials.

Let's face it! Natchez is supposed to beat Franklin County everytime in every sport. Why? Numbers... The population of Franklin County is around 8,000 people. Adams County has over 30,000. Natchez High's enrollment is 1310; Franklin High's enrollment is 449. Natchez Dixie Youth runs about 70 players per division; Franklin County runs about 30 players in each division. Natchez is supposed to win. However, when Franklin County beats Natchez, it is always because "Franklin County cheated" or, my favorite, "the refs or umpires gave it to them."
From Johnny Monroe's FC baseball teams upsetting the mighty South Natchez baseball teams in the late '80's to Mike Goff's '87 football team beating South Natchez 14-13, to Lance Murray's DYB allstar team eliminating Natchez in 1989 from its own state tournament, to Chris Jordan's
basketball team knocking of the top ranked Natchez basketball squad in 1997, all the way to this years football team's come from behind win. These victories were achieved because the players fought for them, not because the "refs" gave it to them. The deal about the Franklin County bringing their own refs was really funny. If you go to the MHSAA website, you will find that Natchez has 16 football officials calling games on Friday night. You will also find that Franklin County has 1 official. And it just so happens that the only official that lives in Franklin County was assigned to the McComb-Brookhaven game Friday night. So we did not bring our own officials. The bad calls went both ways. At least Natchez did not have a TD called back. But hey, that's part of the game. As for the post warning Jefferson County...if I remember correctly in the Franklin - Jefferson game in which we lost, we had a TD called back because of an inadvertent whistle as well as a TD awarded to Jefferson County for an incomplete bounced pass that was awarded a reception by the same official that blew the inadvertent whistle. Did you hear us accusing Jefferson County of cheating. No. We congradulated them, licked or wounds, and ended up at the big house anyway. Natchez should take a lesson in class.

All five of these officials were from Pike County. And I can assure you nobody in Pike County likes Franklin County.

I agree with the posts that FC had nothing to do with the officials.
I also agree that screaming "they cheated" after getting beat is a cop out.
The main point by many, particularly the Natchez fans, is that the officiating in the game was horrible. I think the calls hurt both sides of the field. But when one team gets 18 penalties during a great second half run by the opponents, the natural reaction is to scream foul.
The best officiated game is one in which you don't realize the officials are even there (ask any good official and they would agree). The crew Friday night did a disservice to the football fans in the MissLou.
And Dawgs89, you obviously have never played sports. Games are won on the field not on paper. Yes there are more people that live in Natchez, but you only need 5 to play basketball. Since you are a history buff, do the math on the complete Natchez-FC record in every sport. We have beat you guys many more times. When you guys beat us, its news (that is why it is so easy for you to recall the lightning strikes of the past).

I'm from Natchez, but I agree that all of ya'll need to quit whining. All you are doing is giving those kids an excuse for their loss and reinforcing the lack of discipline and mental toughness that the scout is talking about. He's also right about those players from the SWAC. Has anybody ever been to one of those games? They remind me of the games we used to play out in the backyard. Their football education didn't begin until they made it to the NFL. They were drafted because of their athleticism. If all you have is athleticism, then you better get your attitude right and be mentally tough. Committing penalties late in the game because you are tired is a lack of mental toughness.
Keep ya head up NHS! It was a tough loss but it don't count. Get disciplined and don't let these parents on here provide you with an out for the loss. It was your loss. Take it in stride, learn from it, and don't make the same mistakes again.
As far as cheating officials, I have been an official for some years and there is ABSOLUTELY no motivation for a ref to throw a high school game. Those refs are paid very well for there job, most need the money, and they are not going to risk it. Maybe in college, but we're talking about a NON-DISTRICT game. How much money would you be willing to pay an official to blow a game that holds no bearing on whether you get into the playoffs or not? Use your head.

Hey dog8, You are mistaken about me not playing sports there Sherlock. Just so happened I lettered 3 years in football where I was all-district as a junior and senior and all-state as a senior; also lettered in baseball. You are right, it only takes 5 to make a basketball team. But when team A has 1310 to pick those 5 from and team B has 449 to pick their 5 from, most of the time team A is going to be the strongest. It would also be lightening strike news if Co-Lin beat LSU. As for the history of Natchez - Franklin County series, we actually lead in football 3 wins to 2 losses. You guys own a decisive lead in basketball (not sure of the actual record) and we own a decisive lead in baseball (again, not sure of the actual record) All total, its actually pretty even (even though it shouldn't be.
