Braves offense deflates against Grambling

Published Sunday, September 7, 2008

GRAMBLING, La. — After opening up the offense to the tune of 28 points last week against Southeastern Louisiana, the Alcorn State Braves couldn’t find the end zone against Grambling, falling 29-0.

The Braves had just 176 yards of total offense and threw four interceptions in the loss.

Grambling took advantage of the turnovers, scoring 13 points in the second quarter and adding 16 more points in the third quarter to seal the victory.

The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when Jack Jeffery returned a blocked punt 15 yards for a touchdown. The Tigers scored a few minutes later on a J.P. Tillman 4-yard touchdown pass to Larry Donnell

Tillman and Donnell hooked up on another scoring pass early in the third quarter.

Frank Warren then scored on a 9-yard touchdown run to make the score 26-0 and Luis Leal capped off the scoring with a 28-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

The Braves had only 41 rushing yards in the game and Alcorn’s leading rusher was quarterback Tim Buckley, who had only 34 yards on the ground.

Buckley was only 16-of-33 through the air for 141 yards and three picks while Tony Hobson threw the other Alcorn interception.

This game was an embrassement. This team is much better than this but the offensive coaches need to step up, do the right thing and play the right players. The formations and play selection by the coaches need to improve. We have to establish a running game and not go pass happy. Last year's leading rusher Joshua Brumfield and Eric Reilf didn't even see the field. I cannot understand this move. We need a more balanced attack. Defense is doing a good job but cannot carry the whole load due to lack of offense. We have the talent on offense, coaches plese get yourselves together and use it. If there is not a come to Jesus meeting with the offensive coaches, the only game we will win will be against Texas Southern. I didn't expect us to win the SWAC this year.It takes time to re-build a program. Alcorn needs and desrves "a new day." Just go back the the basics and do the right things coaches.

I started the year off excited, even after the disappointment of losing the first game to SeLU. I felt like I had gotten my money's worth. I didnt make the game in grambling but saw it on television all i have to say is get it together braves you are so much better than that.
