Alcorn Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite drum major Willie Brinson does the worm while leading his band onto the field for half time.

Battle of the bands

Published Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Football wasn’t the only battle being waged Saturday afternoon at Alcorn State University’s Jack Spinks Stadium. Also squaring off were Alcorn’s own Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite and Texas Southern’s Ocean of Soul. Both bands were ready to win the hearts of the attending fans.

As the visiting band, Ocean of Soul was allowed to play first. Their performance featured recent songs such as “Whatever You Like,” and a dance-off between presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain.

Alcorn’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite entertained the crowd with classics R&B songs along with the Alcorn Golden Girls dance team.

It was a great battle with both bands playing their hearts out. In the end, though, the real winners were the fans.

This is how they teach college students to act in public? No wonder our nation ranks 29th in the world for education!!

NtzMom55,
I could not refrain from responding to your post. Can you explain your statement when you advised of the following”No wonder our nation ranks 29th in the world for education!”

Do you realize that these kids also attend college on band scholarship and this is a competition between two HBCU's.

Since you also reside in this country where you stated we are 29th in the world of education I will break down the adjective of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

I would prefer to see these kids marching and playing their music against each other on the field rather than reading about their downfalls in the crime section.

What would have been your response if this same article reflected the photos of band members at such schools as LSU, MSU, OLE MISS and USM. I can only fathom your response.

ntzmom:

waaaay out of line! do you have any idea as to how much work it takes a marching band--ANY marching band--to put on an entertaining halftime show? have you ever seen alcorn's band in person? and, where do you get off in determining how ANYONE should conduct themselves? your idea of 'how a college kid should act' is tunnel visioned and biased. have you ever seen the alcorn chorus? ever been to the alcorn campus? how about the campus in natchez? of all things--you place yourself above everyone who might have a different view of entertainment than yours.

the only problem i have with alcorn's band is that they don't perform enough in the natchez area. your comment only helps to exacerbate long-held stereotypes while completely closing the door to learning about different cultures and expanding one's view of the world.

if you don't care for their style, well, that is your right. but, by tearing down hard work by college kids trying to do the right thing in participating in extra-curricular activities is just mindless. look at the larger picture. be positive in trying to change criticisms that have been levied against ANY college student for their school sponsored activities.

born and raised in natchez, i now live in montana. oh, to have alcorn's band to perform here. they would meet large and cheering crowds. if alcorn band never came to natchez again, who could blame them with comments and long-held beliefs like yours?

I'm sure it took alot of work to do the "worm" on the ground in a $500 uniform! And yes, I am a former Alcorn student. Quit trying to put race as an issue, because it obviously is not.

I personally think it's wonderful that a member of the band can perform just as well as Micheal Jackson!! Go brother's go, I get down to music too. And the lady or get that said ya'll shouldn't behave like that has never enjoyed MUSIC or SPIRIT in her life....keep up the good work BANDS AROUND THE WORLD...AMEN

NtzMom55 I don't understand your comment. Band is an extra ciricular activity that is usually rewarded with some type of scholarship. Band is used to promote school spirit and to bring more people out to the games.
I know you said your comment had nothing to do with race but I have to say it comes across as very mean spirited with racism being the first thing that comes to mind. Maybe you just got up on the wrong side of the bed. Either way ND remove her stupid comments.

all the responses to natchez mom should have hit her in the gut,but she believes her ignorance on the situation is justified.i picture her as probably one of the alcorn nursing school students that did not have to go on campus to be a student.she probably went to scool at the natchez branch. and since it's not about race,i wonder why the students i graduated with didn't think enough of the school to go on campus for graduation day to even collect their diploma's. they waited for them in the mail.wow!!!!!!!!good enough to get a degree from but not good enough to go to there and pick it up.

Wonder why people make comments about other races since they don,t sleep, eat or live with them???? Is it just to be mean or resentful or is it because they have had bad experiences or problems with the other races. I don,t go around making comments on subjects that cause me no problems.

Posted by presby (anonymous) on October 28, 2008 at 8 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Or is it when they cut in line in front of you at the return section at Walmart and glare at you, like don,t say anything because if you do that,s racial. Just keep quiet and keep your mouth shut or i will scream racist.Being rude is okay, but
It's insane that if you make a negative but correct comment about a person of a different race you are branded as racist.

"Glad they can perform as well as M. Jackson"? Geeeez..Now that's a weird one to comment on and compare to. If not for his money that 'freak of nature' would be under the jail....... The bands have grown a bit wild over the years. The bands of yesteryear would just sit and play. Kind of boring as compared to all these people jumping and rolling all over the field.... Now theys all over the place making moves that require lots and lot of practice.

Posted by sunkitty (anonymous) on October 28, 2008 at 8:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I, personally, REALLY enjoy the Alcorn Band! These people are making music AND doing all the dance moves. This takes talent, tons of practice, love and passion for the music and PERSERVERANCE. I am a musician and I teach music - so I know what it takes to do what the Alcorn Band does! HARD WORK and DEDICATION!!

to ntzmom:

... gee, and i thought i was addressing your racial bias. sure seemed out of bounds to me.

and one more thing: what the heck does a marching band have to do with the u.s. "ranking" in education? NOTHING. these supposed rankings are compiled from national statistics, not just college students, and surely not exclusively from college kids in a marching band.

again i say: quit tearing down a college-sanctioned activity and creating comparisons to failing (according to your stats) education in the united states.

it is a BAND. let 'em do their thing in their way and, quite possibly, gain some esteem from what they and their fans see as great entertainment.

Good grief, "whataboutit" says her/his post is not intended to be racial but then there's "you HB people". Thanks, Pedro for the info.

I still say that what the Alcorn Band does is very entertaining and requires a lot of hard work. You have to admire the fact that these Drum Majors are actually conducting and directing the band while doing all their dancing and 'worming'. Everybody has different ways of doing things. It's what makes the world go '

You "HB" people. It is a racist comment within itself. Historically Black College and University Marching Bands are there to hype the crowd and the football team. These young men and women work very hard and diligently. And as far as education, if their academics are not in good standing, they are not allowed to perform. He is only doing the centipede.

As a former member of the "Sonic Boom" (about a 1,000 years ago)...let me explain something:
a) it takes lots of hard work, hours upon hours of practice
in all sorts of weather.
b) it teaches discipline.
c) you learn how to manage your time wisely
d) you voluntarily participate
e) it is a tradition
f) you "act right" or you get kicked out!!!
g) it is the ultimate "team-building" exercise

It is an outlet for hard-working and dedicated college kids that want to be part of something
that is bigger than themselves.

For me it was the first time I truly feared an instructor...I was
scared to death of Mr. Haughton (the band director). His
mantra was "You keep doing it, until you get it right, then do it some more!!!" He would embaress you in front of 250 kids...
you learned how to pay attention!!!!

Where else can 250 kids be melded into one precise accord?
Where else can total and complete respect be demanded by
an instructor?

The students in the marching bands from LSU, JSU, SU, Ole Miss, Alcorn, etc... all deserve respect. They all work very hard
for no pay, just to entertain you at half-time.

If you don't like it...go buy some popcorn during half-time.

I love Alcorn band. They perform a variety of music from R&B, gospel, jazz, etc. at half-time. It's actually what I wait for. I'm a musical person from musical family, and to me half time is game time. Forget what Ntzmom55 said. Everybody ain't gonna like it. Some people like bands where they march military style.

Let's see....some people are really taking this the wrong way. Nothing has been implied about how difficult it is to go to school and particpate in other forms of school activities. It is just a clean and clear statement that flopping around on the ground is in no way the way students should act at a half time performance. Go to a social dance and flop all you want, but at a school function, no matter if you are white, black, red or brown, flopping or worming or what ever you would like to call it, it is in the opinion of some that it is just silly looking....Whites are now the minority and it does make me mad to get glarred at, like if I say ANYTHING I will get a racist card thrown at me!!

The article under the picture(Dyo-OMite)is more racial than the comments.
It's hard to understand any parent being proud of spending a fortune on education then see their kids acting like a worm. I thought band was music not performing circus acts.
I'm old fashion but what ever happen to bands like The Glenn Miller Band. I bet none of the "college students" have ever heard a real band in the life.

Posted by drawpaintsing (anonymous) on October 28, 2008 at 1:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Overthehill60, I'm not picking at you, but it's hard to understand also why any parent would be proud of seeing their sons play a sport where they get their bones broken and they (the parent) have to pay the hospital bill (This relates to any school).

Seriously, the band members get scholarships just like the basketball players, football players, and cheerleaders, etc. The parents aren't wasting money on anything. The Sounds of Dyn-Omite is the name of the band. Dyn-Omite is representing the massive sound of the band instruments as a whole, which to me sounds nowhere racist. Every college band has a name. I can understand why you say bands aren't like they used to be though.

The battle of the bands has been a tradition for many years. It's amazing that this is generating so much hostility and comments about race. So often, we are looking for the worst, in articles such as this. The kids are staying off the streets. They are not getting in trouble and they are practicing many hours for these performance. Why don't we enjoy the entertainment value. Glenn Miller?? I love jazz as much as the next guy, but, come on!

I had forgot about seeing the Ladies of these bands strut their stuff during the parades they attend. Well in the "old days" there were all of the school bands in all of the parades, playing typical marching band music. But now, OMG, they really do STRUT their stuff. It really is embarrasing to watch those ladies stick their bottom ends out like they do. It really is gross and again embarrasing when one is around sr. citizens and young children. Sorry what ever color you are if the shoe fits then you are wearing it.

Very true drawpaintsing, not all people guys or girls in bands no matter what color they are turn out to be the scum of the earth. There are good and bad people of all colors who were possibly even Val's of their school who turn out to be "bad" I did not make comments to second guess what sort of folks these people would make. My only reason for the comments I have made was just to simply say that the way some band members of some bands portray themselves is anything but in a scholar way. And to who ever said they do not get hurt....how can they honestly throw themselves down like that and not hurt themselves (somewhere)? How can those girly girls think they are being anything but whorey when they show their well everything like they do. They know men young and old alike are looking at them in the wrong way. OR at least the wrong way to look at a young college student.
A little respect for one goes a long way.

Pedro, you weren't there at the game. Do you know that those people were probably Alums of Alcorn State University supporting their institution? Come on now... stop with the negativity already!

The bottom line is this....If your not wiling to give anything to ASU but always trying to criticize, go and kick rocks!!! We could care less about what you think including NTZmom55 and others!!! If you knew anything, you would know that Alcorn continuously set standards, more noticeably, having the highest graduation rate among athletes in the STATE and SECOND in the NATION!!!! So, if you don't like what the band does, don't watch!!! So until you are putting money where it matters, KEEP YOUR FLAP CLOSED!! Now run and tell that!
