Dispute led to killing
Published Friday, November 28, 2008
NATCHEZ — It was an apparent domestic dispute that led to the fatal stabbing of a Natchez man Wednesday night.
Akeem Firley, 24, 212B Cloverdale Road, died after receiving a stab wound to his upper chest near his neck.
The suspect in the matter, Jessie Mae Tolbert, 34, of 25 Pintard St., was last seen walking into the woods near Providence Road.
The preliminary evidence police have been able to gather points to domestic violence, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.
“The victim and the suspect have had a dating relationship for at least several weeks,” he said.
A man and a woman transported Firley to the Natchez Regional Medical Center, where the hospital notified police, and Firley was later pronounced dead.
The stabbing — which happened on Government Fleet Road — reportedly occurred in the presence of the two people who transported Firley to the hospital, Mullins said.
“We are currently getting statements from them,” he said.
The vehicle the victim was transported in reportedly contained almost a pound of marijuana, and Mullins said Firley had some crack cocaine and a digital scale in his pockets.
Tolbert reportedly has a criminal past, and in May she was arrested for leading police in a chase that began in Ferriday and ended on Government Fleet Road in Natchez.
The search for Tolbert is ongoing.

dragonflyday:
If you happen to know any cops they will tell you that they find themselves arresting the same criminals over and over. The narcotic officers have the same problem. Then when one of these repeat offenders commits the big "M" (murder) then the Natchez Adams County criminal justice system wants to jump into action. Many people have died because of this mentality twoards handling criminals. If you think it's bad in Natchez then look at New Orleans or Jackson. The key I think is to not let Natchez get as bad as New Orleans or Jackson, the criminal justice system needs to wake up and take notice.

Also, lets remember that WE elected the Judges and the D.A. to protect US. When they stop doing that then they need to to be REPLACED by someone who can/will. Nov 4 2008 should have taught us the power of the VOTE. We vote them in, we can also vote them OUT if they fail to do their jobs.

You cant blame the PD or SO for this. All they can do is arrest them. The court system is the one that hands down the punishment. I dont know if lillie blackmon sanders is still a judge there or not but she was really bad about just giving people a slap on the wrist instead of jail time. Also the lawmakers mandate sentences that apply to the crime. So if your not happy with how things are then get on your legislators and judges.

This is sad. She needs to be locked away for the rest of her life. No jury in Adams County will ever agree to give this piece of crap the death sentence, but maybe they will give her life with no parole.

The America’s court system is congested with criminals. There are new criminals and repeat criminals. Who sets the sentencing guidelines? I think sentencing guidelines are established by the federal government. If this is true, our local judges must follow those sentencing guidelines. Of course weak sentencing guidelines are not an excuse to commit crime. The prisons are overloaded. More prisons are under construction. Prisons remove criminals from the streets but they soon return to commit more crime. The prisons are loaded with repeat offenders. The prisons have thousands of condemned offenders awaiting execution for 10 to 20 years. Our communities are saturated with drugs and guns. Real and entertaining-violent destroy the minds of our youth. Attempts to stop such violent are protected by freedom of speech. Can we say without a doubt that violent in entertainment does not lead to violent/criminal behavior on behalf of our youth? NO PRAYERS IN ANY PUBLIC SITTING. How do we fix these problems? Don’t point fingers, participate in finding solutions?

Just last week it was announced that hundreds of non-violent and sick offenders would be released from the pen becuase of budget cuts. It said that they would be under house arrest and they would be given ankle bracelets to monitor them while they are on parole.
So, why do we even send them away????? We can just put them under house arrest and tell them to be good little felons without all the prisons.....THIS MAKES ME SICK!!!!!!!!

I thank Ronny, and Mike for what they and their folks do. Their budgets are limited and the PD folks need a raise. I agree that we should use the only power a democratic society has and vote out all incumbent judges and the DA. If we have to build 20 prisons then so be it. Buy some land out in the county, fence it off, put up tents, buy bologna in quantity, import a few thousand cougars to live between the fences, charge people to see the cougars and prisoners, and let them serve the sentences they deserve.
Max penalties on all violent offenses.
Three strikes and you're IN.

natsanus, is so very right. Remember way back when they wanted to build a prison in A.C. and it was voted out, well it should have been built then and then courts would have a place to put these people now. Just like always, in our area, too little too late. MENTALITY, as suggested above, is exactly what's wrong with this area. Everyone wants to bury their brains in the sand and let the world just roll by taking care of it's self. IT IS not WORKING!!!! Every one has to take an active part in their community. Stop trying to put the blame where it does not belong!!! Our law officers do their best, the courts do too. They have no place to put these criminals and the criminals know it. When this woman is caught, she will go to prison because all the room they have left is for murderers.
America is now run completely by atheist. We have let them throw God out of our schools and government, and left nothing but the devil's playground. Same sex marriage, abortions and so many other abominations against God is running rampant in America. It's time for the decent people to wake up and take America back and run it under God's law as well as the man made laws of the land. Until then, expect nothing but bad things to happen.

dragonfly you need to go to court sometimes and just see what law enforcement has to do we should be proud we do have law officers even doing this job anymore because it is a thankless job why not ask the chief or sheriff when the last time anyone told them a officer did a good job
I remember when mr ferrell would not even let a mental person be locked up in the county jail and some of the same mental people killed while waiting to go to the state hospital I know now that if the paperwork and judge wants someone in jail to wait for a bed that the sheriff's office will lock them up as long as it takes
Look forward to seeing you around the court house, city court and justice court (now thats where the joke is)

In our country, we must protect the innocent, you cannot prosecute a crime until it is done
Then righteously prosecute
We have no competition among judges, the system locks out too many people from the judge position.
We need common sense and a firm hand in the meating out of sentencing, not a pattycake soft hearted sympathetic jellyfish with no backbone for tough punishment of violent criminals and repeat offenders
Hope they catch this murdering crazy woman and give her the death penalty
But anyone dealing crack deserves what this punk got anyway, street talk is that Akeem is a drug dealer, and he had crack on his person, God does deliver just punishment in some cases it seems.....................

GREAT IDEA (HARDCORPS!) WHY SHOULD WE THE TAX PAYER'S HAVE TO SPEND MILLION'S FOR A NEW PRISON
WHEN ALL THEY DESERVE IS A PUP TENT, BREAD AND WATER!
I ALSO BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO HAVE ( THE DEATH PENILTY AND INFORCE IT! )
IT SAY'S IN THE BIBLE THAT IF YOU TAKE A LIFE, YOU MUST
PAY FOR THE CRIME AND BE PUT TO DEATH!
IF WE HAVE AND INFORCE A LOT TOUGHER LAW'S, THIS WOULD MAKE SOMEONE ( STOP AND THINK BEFORE THEY COMMIT SUCH A HORRIBLE CRIME! )
I ALSO BELIEVE THAT ANYONE WHO MOLEST, RAPE OR KILL ANY CHILD, THEY SHOULD GET THE DEATH SENTENCE!
IF OUR LAW'S DON'T GET TOUGHER,... CRIME WILL JUST INCREASE, BECAUSE THEY KNOW ALL THEY WILL GET IS A SLAP ON THE WRIST AND BE SET FREE!
( IF YOU DO THE CRIME,.....YOU DO THE TIME PERIOD! )
HERE'S SOMETHING ELSE TO THINK ABOUT.
WE HAVE A LOT OF HOMELESS PEOPLE WITH NO PLACE TO CALL HOME.
I THINK IF I WAS HOMELESS AND HAD NO PLACE TO SLEEP OR FOOD TO EAT, I WOULD RATHER BE IN PRISON BECAUSE
AT LEAST THERE YOU WOULD HAVE A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD, A BED AND FOOD TO EAT!
A PRISON TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NOTHING,LOOK'S LIKE A 5 STAR HOTEL!

Let me get this right Slavery was sanctioned by Christianity.
A group of people left England to escape the Churches religious
rules. To start a new world, ~~America~~ to start religious persecution
again how does that work for you righteous people ?

Slavery was never sanctioned by Christianity. Maybe people who professed to be Christians ran chattel slavery but they are experiencing the wrath of God right now. People who were truly born-again did not partake of this abomination. It just wasn't that many people who were truly born of the Holy Spirit. That's why slavery was so abundant then. It's also why our country is so sinful today although you have so many who "profess" to be saved.

Amen Swapmeet, slavery is wrong- any kind of human trafficking- whether it be for labor, sex, or money- it's wrong.
but you forget the fact that, as I read between your lines, that whites were not the only enslavers, blacks enslaved blacks, and still do; whites enslaved whites and still do; men enslaved women, and still do; it's not about race, it's just wrong.
And anyway, what does religion have to do with this crazy crackhead killing another drug dealing crackhead. Nothing, as neither of these fools had religion or morals at all for that matter. Somebody trying to say the prison system is modern slavery? What nonsense, we have to do something with these fools that are running the streets in chaos and anarchy looking for a quick buck any way they can get it be it drugs, sex, stealing, .................
Let's don't confuse the issue. This woman was fool enough to run from the cops in a dangerous chase scene across state borders before, and has now killed her "boyfriend" drug dealer, probably cause he wasn't doing her right in her mind, and all of it is just wrong. Maybe she'll resist arrest and be armed and a righteous cop will do us all a favor..............

Thump, thump, thump,
How the Bible was used to justify slavery:
The Christian church's main justification of the concept of slavery is based on Genesis 9:25-27. According to the Bible, the worldwide flood had concluded and there were only 8 humans alive on earth: Noah, his wife, their six sons and daughters in law. Noah's son Ham had seen "the nakedness of his father." So, Noah laid a curse -- not on Ham, who was guilty of some type of indiscretion. The sin was transferred to Noah's grandson Canaan. Such transference of sin from a guilty to an innocent person or persons is unusual in the world's religious and secular moral codes. It is normally considered highly unethical. However, it appears in many biblical passages. The curse extended to all of Canaan's descendants:
Genesis 9:25-27: "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. He also said, 'Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japeth live in the tents of Shem and may Canaan be his slave'. "
Christians traditionally believed that Canaan had settled in Africa. The dark skin of Africans became associated with this "curse of Ham." Thus slavery of Africans became religiously justifiable. Author Anthony Pagden wrote:
"This reading of the Book of Genesis merged easily into a medieval iconographic tradition in which devils were always depicted as black. Later pseudo-scientific theories would be built around African skull shapes, dental structure, and body postures, in an attempt to find an unassailable argument--rooted in whatever the most persuasive contemporary idiom happened to be: law, theology, genealogy, or natural science -- why one part of the human race should live in perpetual indebtedness to another." 1
Slavery was also condoned and regulated in many passages of the in the Bible. There is no record of Jesus having commented on it. Paul had every opportunity to condemn slavery, particularly in his Epistle to Philemon. But he remained silent, except to urge slaves to be content with their lot and to obey their owners.
Attitudes towards slavery in the Bible
Slavery was sanctioned and carefully regulated by many passages in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) largely in the Pentateuch - its first 5 books. Although slavery was widespread in Palestine during Jesus' ministry, he is not recorded as having expressed any opinion on it. Slavery was casually mentioned without criticism in the various books of the Christian Scriptures (New Testament). The authors appeared to accept slavery as a natural condition -- as a universal institution that was not particularly immoral.

how did slavery comeup on this blog.ANDY,i have been there looking and watching,it's a joke alright.the people most that is,that come threw there don't show respect or show that they are going to change. that to me would seem like the judge would see this and want to teach them a lesson, but i guess the judge has better things to do,than to try to show these people that no matter what they have done, they to can change with help or at least show them that someone wants to see them change and do better for them self. i can't for the life of me figure out,why natchez people would want these type of people running the show here, their not doing their job or what they have promised,so why not get someone elsa that can.STU I'M NOT SAYING EVERY ASD OR NPD OFFICERS ARE ALL BAD,JUST SOME,THAT NEED TO BE BROUGHT DOWN TO SIZE,IF NOT SMALLER. WHEN AN OFFICER DOES DO A GOOD JOB,I'LL SAY SO UNTIL THEN I WANT.ALL I WANT IS FOR THEM TO BE HONEST AND NOT TO TAKE THEIR JOB,AND USE IT AS ,I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT AND YOU CAN'T DO NOTHING TO ME OR TO STOP ME TYPE OF THING.I BELIEVE THATS WHAT ANYONE REALLY WANTS.

Dragon fair enough for me. I used to be with NPD but greener grass has drawn me away. Just please remember this. All LEO's are normal people with extradionary jobs. Also as long as they keep paying peanuts then they aint gonna get the best officers possible. Dont get me wrong there are some of the best officers i know on the force there and then some that aint as sharp as they should be. But they are still officers none the less. And earning the title is not an easy accomplishment. If you ever have another encounter with one then i hope its an enjoyable one. You said that they can do whatever they wanna do. I can see your point there but have to say there are a lot more civilians that have that attitude than the officers. Mistakes are mad by LEO's but we are human ya know. Just hope that the one you are talking to has the integrity to admit when they have done that. Getting back to this story i like hardcorps thought. Just like Sheriff Joe Arapio in Arizona. He treats criminals like criminals and he few repeat visitors to his facility. If a tent w/ no a/c and bologna sandwichs is good enough for our troops overseas then its way to good for our criminals but is the mosut humane thing we can do for them. Even tho they dont deserve that much!!!! Semper Fi hardcorps!

True enough, the jails wouldn't be so full if they (S.O & P.D) Would stop all this nonsense. When I say nonsense, I mean letting people falsify charges on people and pursuing these charges without evidence. These innocent citizens having to sit behind those bars and suffer for dumb cramp. We as citizens need to step up and do our jobs. TRUST ME THERE ARE SUM LOW DOWN DIRTY ONES @ DA NPD AND ASD.
Now they need 2 get out there and find MS. TOLBERT for killing that young man. OOPS she will be out the next day after they find her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dragon yea thats what my name starts with. It is sad to say but NPD has to settle with anybody that applies becasue there is so few choices. Its been awhile since i have been there and the turnover is so great i only know the really dedicated ones there. Oh and a few that are just there for a paycheck too. The few "not so desirables" are giving the good officers a bad rap. Danny White, Craig Godbold, JT Robinson, Gary Nations ( i hear you traffic violators groaning but he is a jam up good cop) and Jay Steele just to name a few. Some of the brightest and most honest cops i have had the pleasure to work with. I know there are people out there that dont like some of the people i named but i gotta tell you if anything hapened to my family i would want these guys answering the call or investigating the incident. They do the right thing regardless and thats what it takes. So for everybody that is gonna have a negative to say about these guys dont. If you knew these people like i do then you would have the utmost respect for them. A bump in pay would work wonders for the quality of people there. But as is you just keep getting new people and once they are up to speed and see what it takes to be a good cop then "c-ya". Trust me on that i did just that.

You folks are missing the point. What Krogers, StuWhoMoved, commander, and others are saying is don’t bash law enforcement when you have no idea what you are talking about. Coming here to bash law enforcement officers and to push a liberal agenda puts you in a very small minority. All that you seem to do is get the blog off topic. Unless you know the law enforcement officers first hand or have walked in their shoes you have no idea what you are talking about. Ladybug, if you have firsthand knowledge about this case you will be at NPD first thing Monday morning to talk to the detectives about it. Someone is dead because law enforcement locks criminals up and the court turns them loose. Getting on here and spreading rumors and personal opinion as fact does nothing, except maybe help you blow off steam of your own. It appears you just have an ax to grind.

BTW, with a lot of the new officers, you are getting exactly what you pay for. McComb, which is smaller than Natchez, starts their police officers off at $2,000.00 more/yr. than Natchez. Brookhaven, which is about half the size of Natchez, starts their officers off at about $1,000.00/yr. more than Natchez. McComb's aldermen make around $6,000.00/yr. compared to Natchez aldermen at $24,000.00

Hummm… now that I think about it I was always told if you didn’t like the way someone else was doing something, do it yourself. I bet none of you that come on here and complain about law enforcement are willing to go out every day and put your health, safety, and your life on the line for what these brave men and women are getting paid. Many seem to forget that our local law enforcement officers are just like our brave military people that do the same everyday. If it was not for our brave men and women in the law enforcement uniforms the streets in this country would be total chaos sort of like Liberia or Somalia.

From reading your first comment it’s obvious you didn’t study much world civilization. Maybe your degree is in basket weaving.
Now, back to the topic. This is a tragic event that shows the morals in Natchez are no better than any other city. Natchez has the same crimes as other cities do, just less of it because we have less population than other cities. I would like to see a study done to compare the amount and types of crime per capita. Natchez suffers from a lot of “non violent” crimes and as some have pointed out, our courts and the prison system can not or does not want to deal with them. NPD, ASO, VPD, etc deal with a lot of repeat offenders. After some of these repeat offenders go through the system several times, seemingly unpunished, they do become violent offenders. It starts out in the youth courts where they learn about the slap on the wrist and getting fussed at.

I Knew firley real well and was sadden by his death. I'm also disgusted with the democrat for printing the information about crack cocaine found in his pocket considering they said it was a domestic dispute, that was very irrelevant. My argument is it paints a picture of firley that dipicts him as the bad guy;when he actually was a good guy. So as the reader read his story we quickly assume he was a drug dealer, considering the info he is, but let's not forget he was the victim. rest in peace firley gone but never forgotten

Please come foward and tell law enforcement what you know. If not ...shut up, you are part of the problem. Covering up for people when they are wrong. I'm sorry a man is dead, I'm sure he had his good qualities but the fact remains he had drugs in pocket along with scales to weigh the dope he was selling. The detectives are waiting to talk to you. Go talk to them, tell them what you know.

Enough with the slavery and welfare systems workers sitting on their rears, getting crazy checks and bumming off of the people who worked for 30-40 years then retired and are still paying them to be non-producers. They are like mountain ticks, they just stick to you and suck and suck and never give back squat.
