One man dies in motorcycle wreck
Published Monday, May 5, 2008
NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a motorcycle accident late Saturday night in which there was one fatality.
Deputy Maj. Jody Waldrop said Bobby P. Hawthorne, 54, of Harrisonburg, La., was pronounced dead at the scene.
Waldrop said Hawthorne was traveling on Liberty Road, near the Second Creek Bridge, when his motorcycle left the road, striking an embankment and then a tree.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Adams County Coroner James Lee said Hawthorne’s death was caused by head and neck trauma.
“It’s a terrible tragedy,” he said.
Lee said Hawthorne’s autopsy was being conducted on Sunday afternoon in Jackson.
Waldrop said the while the cause of the accident was unknown investigators were continuing to interview witnesses from the scene.
Waldrop said a toxicology screening would be conducted.

This is extremely sad!! There should be some kind of law out there to protect Bikers, I m sure they wont like it but in the instance that it could save their life, maybe they would understand.

I don't live in Natchez anymore, but I'm pretty sure I remember where Second Creek Bridge is on Liberty Road. I recall there was a dangerous curve there. Will someone tell me if there are signs along the road to warn motorists of the hazard at that point? And perhaps another sign or two could help prevent more accidents. Of course people should be extra careful, but I also think that segment of Liberty Road is especially tricky.

opinsab, Sorry, but I really don't understand your comment. What kind of law are you talking about?
Posted by mike8427 (anonymous) on May 5, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Opinsab - What kind of law could have prevented this? Late at night on Libery Road is not safe, sometimes good judgement is the only way to prevent accidents. Liberty road has lots of curves and lots of critters around it, plus it has very little lighting. Just too many factors that could cause an accident.

That is correct mike8427! There is No lighting in that area of Liberty Road. This was such a tragedy! My deepest sympathies go out to this man's family.

this is the second accident involving a fatality in less than a month in the county. maybe the board of supervisor need to seriously consider placing speed humps, and certian location throughout the county,because there isn't enough law enforcement presence to make people slow down. i travel kingston rd.,liberty rd. and palestine rd. all the time and see people driving like fools.

kingston road is like a interstate....as well as liberty road...
Posted by mommyof3 (anonymous) on May 5, 2008 at 1:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Acedog, you are right people drive Liberty Road like the devil himself is chasing them. With the situation however some well placed street lights would have helped prevent this accident. I was on the scene at this accident. This was a horrible example of traveling an unknown country rode in the dark. I live in that area and can tell you that there are anywhere from 8 to 10 accidents a year in that area. The first thing the board of supervisors need to do is repair the gaurdrails on the bridge that were damaged in a wreck over a year ago. Then they need to pay the utility bill for a couple of street lights. THe curve right before the bridge at Second Creek is VERY dangerous. Noone ever realizes how steep it is until it is too late. In this case Mr. Hawthorne missed the curve right after the bridge. Still a great tragedy.

acedog you can not put speed bumps on roads like liberty and kingston what you need is the legislature to let sheriff run radar but that is another story speed limit is already low on county roads so what we need to educate the public how to drive we bitch when the sheriff writes tickets and we bitch when they don't how can they win come on folks and acedog this is 5 deaths since jan for the county way toooooo many
i see the sheriff on kingston and liberty and when you do not see them, we are speeding again

First of to (acedog) not everytime some wrecks on a bike, is it there fault. My brother got killed by a motorist, over a month ago, but the paper just put the one that is still alives comment in the the paper, my point is DONT ASSUME THERE ARE FOOLS ON MOTOR BIKES RIDEING, AND DECIDE TO COMMIT SUICIDE.YOU SOUND LIKE AN IDIOT AN SO DOES FIRE39212. Go find a job to occupy your time instead of putting idiotic stuff in the comments. To the family, i know what your feeling, its not a day that goes by and i think about my brother laying on the side of the rd. for 3 hrs., and the sherriffs dept. letting the guy leave the seen with suspended drivers license, and no breath test done.And yes that is in the report, if anybody wants to know. After wreck my sister went back down to crash site, and picked up his puddle of brains with our bear hands. People are not just rd kill, they are loved ones. POLITICS PLAY A ROLL WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO COLOR. P.S MY BROTHER WAS WHITE.

allgood... RIDEING...hmmm... how about RIDING?
And "bear hands", is that a genetic trait that runs in your family? I am aware that human hands can be considered "bear-like"... are you referring to your hands being large and hairy?

Personally, I believe motorcycles are unsafe, loud, attention-getters. I wish they would all be outlawed. People should quit being lazy and go ride a bicycle (or a horse).

O come on now obama, why don't we just all walk everywhere in full body armor and helmets so we won't get hurt. Motorcycles are a safe, economic form of transportation when ridden by safety conscious people.

like i said there isn't a real law enforcement presence on these county roads most of the time you see a deputy there diving like fools themselves.--------to allgood if the sheriff office did what you said shame on them. i guess the guy involve were one of there buddies. that seems to be the way there handling bussiness now.

ihave heard it all now why don't acedog and allgood take your case to the grand jury with the district attorney accidents happen and white and black is not the answer but i would expect that from you allgood what is your point allgood

allgood just forget it your family has been all over town and the end result was a accident what are you trying to make ofyour brothers wreck have you ever talked to the district attorney if you thought something different i think you give the sheriff office a bad shot in this even the sheriff has to have a cause to arrest someone girl you know the man that hit your brother was black so its was a crime the law says you have to have a reason to arrest someone thanks goodness for the law or we would all be in jail for nothing again accidents happen and i am sorry for your loss god does not make mistakes

allgood I am sorry for your loss, as I am sorry for this families loss also. Please ignore obamayamama, she likes to make trouble. Motorcycles are safer than a bike and less so than a tank. We have had and ridden motorcycles in the past and probably will in the future. But all it takes is a dog jumping out in front of you, or a dark night and sharp curve, or an oil slick on the road, or any number of unexpected occurances - then you've had it. I have seen motorcycles wrecks where the riders walk away, and I have seen car wrecks where everyone was killed. If God says its your time, it just doesn't matter. Again, I pray for you all to find help from Him.

My husband and myself have a had a motorcycle for years. Sure they can be dangerous, but so can cars.
We have done so much traveling & were able to enjoy scenery that I'm sure we would have missed in a car.
You HAVE to follow strict rules while morotcycling or careless accidents will happen.
You have to watch out for the bikers that don't follow these rules because they can really be a problem.
My son's friend's Mom was killed on a motorcycle a few years ago & I must admit I always have that in the back of my mind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to express my sympathy to Bobby P. Hawthorne's family & friends. I'm sure he died doing what he loved.
I agree with dragonflyday. Also, look at my comment above. I was the second person to post. I asked about signs. Folks on this page have discussed everything (street lights, speed bumps, helmets, laws, radar enforcement, etc.) -everything except a few signs to warn motorists of the danger especially at night. I remember that Kingston has a dangerous curve with a long series of those yellow and black arrow signs- maybe 20 of them in a row. When you approach this curve, you would have to be asleep at the wheel (or handlebars) to not notice it. Again, maybe the curve at Second Creek Bridge needs these signs. I don't remember seeing them back in the day. Go have a look. If not, demand signs. If you think signs are too expensive, just steal some from teenagers. I am Advanced Hominid and I approved this message.
To the Hawthorne family, My deepest sympathy, I will pray for you tonight.
To the bloggers that want to the sheriff to get radar, TOO BAD SO SAD. The reason it was taken away from them was because many were abusing the right and creating speedtraps to enhance the budget of their offices and the chancery courts pay. The abuse got enough people mad and the right was stripped. I do not believe the time has yet come to give it back again. I know that Jimmy Warnock and his slightly imbalanced family will get on here and try to come down on me for it, but I do not care anymore. This is my opinion and they can go suck an egg!!!!!Preferably a rotten one!!!!!
To the bloggers that want street lights in that area, great idea. Talk to the alderman for your area and see if it is feasible at this time. This might save lives.
To the bloggers that want to do away with street motorcycles, this is America and we have the right to ride if we want to. I do not have a bike right now, but have been looking for one that my wife and I could ride on the weekends to help save gas and to give us a pleasurable time together. Every biker is not trying to get attention, just trying to enjoy what freedom we have left, before some well-meaning but idiotic politician takes another freedom away.
Speed bumps on a country road like Liberty Road will KILL more than they would ever Save. Another bad idea.
Good night. And peace be with you...
PS. Liberty road was once considered Mississippi Highway 550 something. If it still is, this gives State Highway Patrol the right to write speeding tickets...Check into it if you want traffic to slow down...
MHP can write tickets whereever they wish, where a law is violated, once they observe it, in the city, county or on any state or federal designated highway!
OBAMAYAMAMA----- Are you completely heartless? They lost someone they love? They may not be as "SMART" as you think that you are and you may feel that they are some piece of trash, but they are still people that are grieving! My husband and I have been in two motorcycle accidents and were blessed by GOD to come out with only minor injuries. Would you like to know the cause of the accidents? We were side swiped by some a**hole that was not paying attention. If you have never driven one you have no idea how much you have to watch and pry that you are not killed by some idiot. As for being lazy because we have motorcycles! I ride a bike everyday with my children and we have horses! Get a LIFE! You are a JOKE!
MY NAME IS TJ AND UNTIL RECENTLY WAS ENGAGED TO BOBBY PAUL, THE LONE RIDER WHO DIED ON LIBERTY ROAD SATURDAY NIGHT. THANKYOU FOR THE MANY PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES FROM EVERYONE. SOMEPOSTINGS HERE ARE LACKING IN APPROPRIATENESS, BUT AS THE PREVIOUS POSTER COMMENTED. "THIS IS AMERICA", AND WE HAVE FREE SPEECH. HAVING SAID THAT, I WOULD LIKE FOR THE READERS TO KNOW THAT BOBBY PAUL WAS A FREE SPIRIT WHO LOVED THE WIND ON HIS FACE WHEN RIDIN HIS HARLEY. HE LOVED THAT BIKE AND WAS AN AVID RIDER. SO, I KNOW THAT SOMETHING WENT WRONG WHEN HE CAME AROUND THAT CURVE. IT APPEARED HE NEVER HIT HIS BRAKES AND I AM CONVINCED THAT MANY FACTORS PLAYED A PART IN HIS DEATH. HE DIDNT KNOW THE AREA , I DONT BELIEVE HE COULD SEE WELL ENOUGH TO FIND THE ROAD IN THAT VERY DARK CURVE. IT APPEARED HE RODE THAT EMBANKMENT ALL THE WAY DOWN AS FAR AS HE COULD AND JUST RAN OUT OF ANYWHERE TO GO AND HIT THE TREE. ANOTHER FEW FEET AND HE COULD HAVE HIT PAVEMENT AGAIN. ALL THESE IFS RUN THROUGH MY HEAD, WHAT IF ID ANSWERED THE PH 8 MIN. EARLIER? WHAT IF HED LAYED IT DOWN?, COULD I HAVE STOPPED HIS DESTINY HAD I ANSERED?? WOULD HE HAVE SURVIVED IF HE CHOSE ANY OTHER WAY TO REACT TO LOSING THE CURVE? THE ANSWER IS CLEAR TO ME, THAT BOBBY JUST RAN OUT OF TIME SAT. NITE. GOD CALLED HIM HOME AND IT WAS HIS TIME. I THINK HE RODE THAT EMBANKMENT ALL THE WAY DOWN AND INTO ETERNITY ...INTO THE ARMS OF GOD. THE LAST TEXT HE SENT ME SAID "I LOVE YOU, DONT WORRY BOUT NUTHIN, EVERYTHINGS GONNA BE ALRIGHT." NOW THATS WHAT I GOT TO GO ABOUT DOING SOMEHOW WITHOUT MY FRIEND. GOT TO BE ALRIGHT. SO, RIDE ON BOBBY, RIDE ON MY LOVE. RIDE ON WITH GOD. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU KIM FOR HOLDING BOBBYS HAND IN HIS FINAL MOMENTS. THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO HIS FAMILY AND TO ME THAT HE DID NOT DIE ALONE ON THE SIDE OF A DARKENED ROAD. no street lights or speeding bumps would ever help.i agree with advanced hominid,its very unsafe and dum to even think it.that road i travel every day along with cranfield rd and the people that do speed will get caught sooner than later ,if they are lucky.i've been ran off the road and if i could have gotten my ride turned around in time,they would be the one's going off the road.to fire39212 algood did live in that area at one time,all her life,she was raised out there,until she moved awhile back.so we do know what we are talking about.as for kingston rd which one are you talking about upper kingston or kingston rd,is it the one that comes out at 61south or going towards hutchinslanding rd. people will speed no matter what,but just because a death happened on liberty rd doesn't mean you should bring speeding up now,call watts see what he say's,.
I never said she didn't...I was raised on Liberty road it is alot safer now than it use to be.....I am talking about kingston road not upper kingston....even though upper kingston is pretty curvy itself....kingston road comes out on both hutching landing and 61....That's correct they will speed.....It never said he was speeding...I was posting to another poster about the speeding if you will read above my post......
Most folks drive like maniac,s in Adams county period. A man from North Caroline moved here and his insurance rates went up 18%, his agent said it was because he moved to Natchez. We have one of the highest accident rates per capita than anywhere in the USA. We have auto body repair shops on every corner and when it rains,they most folks around here speed up instead of slowing down,plus we have oneof the highest rate of frivioulus lawsuits anywhere..Welcome to the city of high rates and lotsa fender benders.
My prayers go out to the Family and Friends. We ride motorcycles down Liberty Road all the time along with a lot of other riders. All the county roads are curvy and dangerous. speed bumps or lights won't help. People are the only thing that can help themselves. I have lived in that area for over 30 years and there are a number of wrecks each year. The sherriff and the deputies always come when they are called. They can't be everywhere at all times. Radar would help greatly. Funds need to be provided to allow for better pay and better equipment so that they can do something about the speeding and drunk driving in the area. People think Liberty Road is a race track. The people that live in that area would not object if they would like to straighten out some of the curves along that stretch of road. even at the accident people where still coming thru there light speed demons. flashing lights didn't phase them. some pleope just don't care.
I just want the families to know how our hearts go out to each and everyone.My family knows first hand what Liberty Road can do to a family.My Mother and Father buried two sons Tony was killed on Liberty Road July 26 1987 and Ricky Was killed in front of my Grandparents house off Springfield Road.July 22 1954.MY sister was killed on june 24 1999 in a car wreak she was 32 years old.MY mother also lost a child between me and Tony.Alot of saddness in one family.You can blame it on the road,people,or whatever you want to but the outcome is the same.The loss hurts so very bad.Only time will help ease the pain,but never will we forget.Also remember Rodger Spring,Bill Weathersby,The young man who's last name was Butler who was killed on Liberty road.Steven Buckles(6yrs old).And the list goes on there are many more some i can't remember.Respect Liberty Road or whatever road you're on.Repect yourself and others that are driving we are all guilty at one time are another for going to fast are not paying attention.I do know that when it's you're time to go theres not really anything you can do. But i also beleive you can help things along sometimes.GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERYONE!!!COX HILL Cathy Cox Warren
To the family and friends of Bobby Hawthorne; God is the only one who can help you get through this tragedy. Trust in him he will not lead you astray. Bobby's days were numbered liked the pages of a book and his life written like chapters of a novel. He was in his last chapter and on the last page. God put him here to serve a purpose and once his work here was done; He knew that he had to travel on to a greater place. Bobby has done what we all must do. We don't know when our book of life will close; just as Bobby's has done but the one thing we do know is that it will happen. Just be right, do right, treat people right and you will be ready to spend your eternity with God.
May God watch over your family. Amen
Secondly, to the family of David Dunson, I prayed for you all when I heard about David. He was a very kind person. I remember him and his sisters {Samantha & Christine} They all seemed to be nice people. We were from the same neighborhood and we rode the school bus together. I always wondered where they were and how they were doing now. To you guys if you're reading this: Go to God and let him help you with your grief.I hope that you all are able to grow stronger daily and one day soon losing David won't hurt as bad as it does right now. May God bless you and be with you.
Sincerely,
Samantha
My name is Krystal Hawthorne, I am the daughter of Bobby Paul Hawthorne. Not just saying this cause he is my dad, but he was the one of if not the best person with the biggest heart. He would do anything for anyone and give you his last dollar and the shirt right off of his back. He was a great man and father and also a great rider. He always wore all of his saftey gear and his helmit.Also has ridden for years. This was just an act of God, just his time to go be with god. My dad is now in heaven with all the angels where he belongs with no hurt, sadness, or pain. I wanted to thank all of you who left kind messages. They are appreciated.
