Latham to continue work

Published Tuesday, April 8, 2008

NATCHEZ — While the Adams County Board of Supervisors did have their monthly meeting on Monday, one of the most decisions of the day came after the meeting.

Board President Henry Watts said attorney Bob Latham will continue to represent the county in the International Paper land closing.

After the meeting board members were informed by Rentech senior vice president and project developer, Dick Sheppard, that a new legal strategy to facilitate the land closing between IP and Rentech had been developed.

Watts said IP’s attorneys would essentially be making a closing list.

Watts said the list, to be completed as early as this week, will outline all legal documents and other things that need to be completed before the Rentech land closing.

The list will also delegate between attorneys for the county, IP and Rentech as to which attorney will handle what responsibilities in the closing.

Latham, former county attorney, was specially hired by the county facilitate the Rentech deal.

However his contract was only valid until April 1.

There was some discussion as to whether or not Latham would continue to represent the board after his contract expired.

At one point Watts mentioned the possibility of a contract extension or even hiring a new attorney.

On Monday Watts said Latham will continue to work without a contract.

“Typically (attorneys) don’t have a contract,” he said.

“He’ll submit his invoice and get paid.”

Sheppard said he was pleased Latham would be staying with the county until the deal closes.

“He a valuable history and knowledge of this project,” Sheppard said of Latham’s work on the project. “He can help move this thing to fruition.”

Rentech’s land deal was supposed to close on March 28, however mineral rights issues postponed the deal at the last minute.

The closing on the land has been postponed for 60 days.

Once purchased, Rentech plans to build a chemical production facility on the old IP site.

In other news from the meeting the board agreed to help Leadership Natchez with the construction of a pavilion at Duncan Park.

Charlie Speed, a spokesman for the group, said he was very pleased with the board’s participation.

The county will contribute the slab for the pavilion to be built on top of.

“The pavilion is something everyone can use,” he said. “It’s an asset to the community.”

Just as well! It seems Adams County has all the money in the world! Let's pay him. Why not hire two or three more to help him? B/S!

Latham is your typical Democrat. He drags out the process and sucks up the peoples money and we get nothing in return. To bad his buddy Hillary is doing badly.

This is good news. The same steps are involved when closing any land purchase.

I cannot believe that anyone in this country has the nerve to describe someone as a "typical Democrat". Whatever the shortcomings of previous Democratic presidents were, they DID NOT lie to the American public and send our men and women into a conflict based on falsehoods that has resulted in 4000 American casualities. Sex in the White House involving two individuals does not begin to equate with what the Bush administration has done. Those of you who supported "Dubya"...what is your answer now? I lost lifelong friendships over the last election and sadly my "former friends" have lost much more...two sons (their only children) and a daughter. And their support of Bush is nill at this point. Shame on those of you who blindly supported him...the deaths of thousands of Americans who went into a war based on lies and lost their lives is on your conscience.

P.S. Clinton's chief accuser, Newt Gingrich, waited until his wife was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery to tell her he was leaving her for a young aide he had been sleeping with. So which is worse?

A little off the topic but to the people who continue to say President Bush lied to get us into this war. A little honesty would be nice instead of making false statements. Not only did Bush, our congress and senate on both sides believe it but so did our former President's like Bill Clinton. Read statements below:

Other countries possess weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles. With Saddam, there is one big difference: He has used them. Not once, but repeatedly. Unleashing chemical weapons against Iranian troops during a decade-long war. Not only against soldiers, but against civilians, firing Scud missiles at the citizens of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Iran. And not only against a foreign enemy, but even against his own people, gassing Kurdish civilians in Northern Iraq.

The international community had little doubt then, and I have no doubt today, that left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will use these terrible weapons again.

The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world.

The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people.

These are statements made by Bill Clinton in 1998 after he authorized air strikes on Iraq. Of course Bill's reasons also could be called into question because he would not do anything when Saddam refused to cooperate with the United Nations weapons inspectors until the eve prior to vote on his impeachment which these air strikes delayed.
Bush has done what Clinton said needed to be done. It could be debated that they were wrong but to say Bush lied without any evidence is wrong.

To debate which party has done the best is very easy. last 30+ years,
Bush 1, Bush 2, and Reagan VS Clinton & Carter = Enough said

Um, mucuus plug, could you represent moronic southern stereotypes any better? It's people like you that keep electing these self-serving repulicans to power who are running our country into the ground. Thanks, buddy...!
