Callon to ring bell at NYSE today

Published Tuesday, April 8, 2008

NATCHEZ — When the bell rings to close the New York Stock Exchange today, a local hand will be the one doing the ringing.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Callon Petroleum Company Fred Callon will ring the closing bell at the end of trading today.

Callon, the company’s senior management team and their spouses were invited to ring the bell to celebrate 10 years of the company being traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

“Obviously, it’s an honor to be asked to ring the closing bell, and we’ll be there with all the guys who have been responsible for the progress we have made in the last few years,” Callon said.

The Callon representatives will tour the floor and meet with trading specialists before the ringing of the bell.

“It’s not really ringing a bell,” Callon said. “There is a button, and there are lots of security measures around it.”

The company’s co-founder, John Callon, rang the bell to open trading in April 1998. John Callon and his brother Sim Callon, Fred Callon’s father, founded the company in 1950.

Callon Petroleum Company is one of four Mississippi-based businesses traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Trading ends at 4 p.m. eastern standard time.

Congratulations on reaching this milestone! I wonder what Callon's stock is trading at right now? That information should have been included in this article.

Callon has had to go thru a lot of changes to survive. Many small people, employees got burned in the process. That's just the oil business I guess no one really matters except the people at the top.

Congratulations Callon Petroleum!!! We are very proud of you and I'm happy to be one of you. Callon is the most wonderful, caring Company to work for. The comment from "Beammeupscotty" is so untrue. They care very much about all of us, even the ones on bottom. "Things" happen, and sometimes it does hurt, but I can assure you Callon Petroleum takes every measure of effort to avoid that. We're very blest to work for this Company that has survived 58 years in Natchez - that's awesome to say the least! And it's wonderful how three brothers started this Company and stuck together when times were tough. They're strenght & devotion is still evermore present, hopefully we can do them justice in our work.

We love you Callon Petroleum & am proud of you!!!!!

Wow! This is the most exciting news for Natchez since that Natchez guy wrote that Michael Jackson song which nobody remembers anymore. By the way, MamaC, it creeps me out when you capitalize “Company.” Does Callon require you to show that kind of reverence? First there was “the Church” and now there’s “the Company.” That’s spooky.

MammaC you are riding the good times you'll sing a different tune if the oil field goes bust again.

Saw Callon on CNN for the closing bell a little while ago. Had the CP banner hanging behind the podium

How did they survive for 58 years. Stuck together when times were tough, but shafting others. What about the people who lost in the last venture. Maybe the WS Bell should toll 12 times for the dead bodies of investors left behind. Mamma C is narrow minded enough to see through a keyhole with both eyes

Many people don't understand what a crap shoot the petroleum industry is. If a well is dry the investors lose all of their money, but if it hits it makes a bundle for them...any way you cut it it's a gamble.

The oil bust of the 1980's hurt everyone, owners lost businesses and investments, employees lost jobs, consumers lost money in higher prices, cities, such as Natchez whose tax base relied much on the oil business, lost revenues. The simple fact that some such as Callon survived is an incredible achievment considering the luck and perseverance it required.

I don't think the layoffs that all oil companies in the 1980's were forced into should be grounds for condemning them for something they never would willingly do...it is an unfortunate fact of capitalism, which ain't perfect, but it's better than any other economic system man has yet invented.

I should know, I'm oil field trash twice ways and my family lost a bundle in the bust. Everyone I've ever known who worked for Callon appreciated the company's concern for the employees.
