NATCHEZ — The Cathedral High School and Adams County Christian School boys squared off again Thursday night, this time on the basketball court.

And the Green Wave got the win in this matchup, beating the Rebels 66-26. Cathedral’s D.J. Perry scored 20 points, while Caleb Upton and Jamon Gray got hot from beyond the arc, nailing several three-pointers and both finishing with nine points.

ACCS’ Ryan Strong led the Rebels with eight points, and Hayden Newman scored six points for ACCS.

ACCS head coach Rick Fife said being able to play a fellow Natchez school is a big advantage for both teams, especially during the holiday season.

“I feel like it’s not only good for the schools, but for the town as well,” Fife said. “They can get out and watch some kids that aren’t normally able to play each other on a yearly basis, whether it’s baseball, basketball or football. I think it’s a really good rivalry game that we need to keep up.”

Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold also said he was happy for his players to face the Rebels this season.

“For one, we both have to travel far enough (with our conference) games, so adding someone here right in our own backyard, nobody has to travel during Christmas,” Arnold said. “The game is over at 8:30, and everybody will be home in 15 minutes, and it’s a better gate (income) for the home team than you’ll have against any other game during the year.”

And although the Green Wave boys are on top right now in the head-to-head matchup, Arnold said he expects the rivalry to go through cycles.

“When we’ve played them, we’ve gotten the better of them with the boys, and they’ve gotten the better of us with the girls,” Arnold said. “Over time, it will probably all equal out, so I don’t see how you can go wrong (playing this game).”

ACCS (1-11) will play in the Simpson Academy tournament Tuesday, and Cathedral (6-6) will play in the WCCA tournament that same day.

Natchez versus Vidalia

The Vikings dropped a 69-45 decision against cross-town rival Natchez High School early last week. NHS’ Derrian Johnson totaled 17 points for the Bulldogs, and DeArrius Griffin was one shy of Johnson with 16.

Trey Virgis and Trashone Mayes each led Vidalia with nine points, while Michael Whitley had eight points.

The Vikings struggled against the Bulldogs’ press, and head coach Robert Sanders said it was a matter of execution.

“We know it’s coming, and we just have to execute,” Sanders said. “We have to slow down and handle the ball and make good passes.”

NHS (7-6) will play in the Sunkist Tournament Tuesday, while Vidalia (6-5) will play in the Madison Parish tournament Wednesday.

Trinity Episcopal

The Trinity boys got a 70-60 win against CENLA Christian last Tuesday right before the holiday lull hit. Sky Logan scored 15 points for Trinity, and Trae McKenzie and Garrett Vinson both tallied 11 points. McKenzie also had a double-double.

Trinity (8-1) will play Tuesday in the Brookhaven tournament.
