The cupcakes are being iced, the balloons are ready to be inflated and local tourism officials are busily making last-minute preparations for the biggest birthday bash for Natchez’s 300-years of existence. But before the official birthday celebrations begin on Wednesday, let’s look as some of the good news from last week:
-The railroad line between Natchez and Brookhaven will receive more than $14 million in repairs, thanks to $10.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGER discretionary grant program. Natchez Railway, the company that owns the line, will provide the remainder of the funds. Leaders in Washington, Jackson and Natchez touted the announcement as an investment in the region that will boost production and increase jobs. The work includes repairing five railroad bridges, replacing a failed culvert and other work. Thanks to Natchez Community Development Director James Johnston who shepherded the grant and all who helped get grant approval for this critical project.
-Two local businesses and the Natchez Convention and Visitor’s Bureau received high honors from the readers of Mississippi Magazine. Each July the lifestyle magazine reveals the results of its reader survey. Fat Mama’s Tamales was honored for having the best tamales in the state and the City of Natchez was named the state’s best weekend trip. Historic Dunleith Inn was named as a finalist for the state’s best bed and breakfast. Consistently, Natchez businesses and tourist attractions make this annual list. Congratulations to all the winners for showing the unique things that make Natchez great.
-Hundreds of people crowded the Natchez Convention Center Friday night to kick off the annual Natchez Food and Wine Festival. In its 15th year, the weekend filled with the best in regional cuisine from the hands of some the South’s best chefs has become one of the city’s most successful events. Congratulations to the organizers for continuing to make this event a success.
As we enter a new week, let’s remember to always look for those who make our community special.
