NATCHEZ — Natchez-Adams County residents will have the opportunity to be empowered Saturday.
Humana Inc. will host a free, community-wide “Fit for Life” event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Natchez bluff.
The event is tailored to kick-start Humana Inc. and the Clinton Health Matters Initiative’s goal to work toward improving Natchez-Adams County health by 20 percent by 2020.
“We are working hard every day to improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Eric Eaker, who is a director at Humana Inc. “It’s inspiring to see how people here have come together to not only envision a healthier community, but begin taking meaningful steps to make that vision a reality.”
The event Saturday will include a family fun walk, free health screenings, Frisbee, volleyball, a Zumba exercise class, a stretch and tone exercise class, giveaways and a farmers market and art market.
In addition to the active events, Humana Inc. spokesperson said the event will welcome the community by unveiling five Natchez-Adams County inspired murals, created for the community by the community.
The murals will tell the stories of five local individuals who have improved their lives by making healthy decisions.
“Hopefully people will be inspired,” the Humana spokesperson said. “Hopefully these individuals and residents that are featured will continue to be an inspiration to the community and help others.”
The murals were drawn by artists from Brooklyn and painted by local Natchez residents.
The murals will be revealed at 9:45 a.m., just prior to the event’s family fun walk at 10 a.m.
Following the walk, Humana Inc. will distribute an illustrated, graphic novel that provides a deeper look into the lives of the five Natchez-Adams County residents.
“We hope the mural and illustrated novel serve as reminders that a healthier future is within reach,” Eaker said.
Eaker hopes to use Saturday’s event as a launching pad that will take Natchez on its five-year journey.
“We think that this is a really good opportunity for the community to start thinking about their health,” Eaker said.
Humana Inc. and the Clinton Health Matters Initiative’s statistics show Natchez-Adams County is one of the areas in the country that is behind in terms of being health conscious.
“I think it all starts with the community — making the decision together to become more healthy,” the Humana spokesperson said.
The “Fit for Life” event will be the first of many programs planned for the community over the next several months to promote healthy lifestyles and decisions.
